Turbine you should change the name of the thread to “App vs. Elon ticket discussion”
We ain’t App. The comparison is bad.
- App has won three natties. UL has won 0.
- App beat Michigan. We beat Iowa state in a pandemic year
- App has 111 wins from 2000 to 2010. We had 45.
- App has been to seven bowls in seven years of FBS play. UL has been in 9 in 48.
Someone brought up App. Peer University in our conference. So the chatter about tradition, national championships, Boone...etc. And, you can certainly site some of those points as reasons for thier season ticket success.
However, those NC were won years ago, the Michigan win was a long time ago...lots of water under the bridge. The last 4 years, a pretty good rivalry has developed between the two teams...and yet, to my point, we've beaten App 3x in a row, beat them in the championship game, wear out new conference foe Thundering Turdsss (and App rival) in our bowl game, while App is getting hammered by Western KY Jelly in its bowl. UL finishes with a huge winning streak of 13 games, App finishes with 2 straight losses.
So, its obvious App has leveraged its positives, even after a disasterous end to its season, to sell out its season tickets....HTF did they do that? Tradition? Thats some of it....Schedule, yep, that too. And they have been scheduling up the last few years. Whats the secret sauce? What are they doing UL isn't doing? How do they achieve this level of success in the Sun Belt, while UL hangs around the normal season ticket numbers with its thumb up its azz? I don't know the answer other than what I've pointed out. I do know, and I've posted this before, that UL could learn a ton from App and how they go about their business. No shame here stealing ideas...I do it all the time. When summer hits, our athletic dept. goes into shut down mode, stelth...not very active, not very loud, not very engaging (unless you're in the $3K+ RCAF club)
UL is kidding itself if it thinks it can get away with its current "football business" model much longer. Take a look at the competition...what's happening at the more succesful peer universities that UL could capitalize on?
This program in this market with the recent success should be red hot right now. You can't keep doing things the same way and expect different results.
I was hopeful while reading your post there would be some things we could learn. You are right, we don't need to reinvent the wheel, just use it better than we have and learn from others what works an doesn't work.
Two things I would like to post.
One, I fully expect our season ticket sales to be more than 11k, 15k sounds good to me.
Two, let's not get so carried away on this rcaf meet and greet function. You have to have something like this to spread excitement and you want it to be a smaller gathering to generate possible added investment in our program. There should be an additional function, similar to the casino, for ALL Cajun fans to participate in.
IMO
….I guess the biggest thrill as far as crowd was what I have called “The sea of Red” at one of HUD’s NO bowls entire UL side top a bottom filled with end zones and a little of extended Endzone…..what the hell was that? I realize some of the tickets were give a ways but that was tremendous…….very Big Time….,so depressing to go to HSs and see the I am going to LSU wave……then just hanging in town the LSU apparel on those who will never see the inside of their stadium to the Elite members of the community…..like the hockey deal, the new is all cool but fades quickly!
It was never supposed to be an Elon vs App thing. I brought the game up as I was comparing Apps largest crowds in history vs the cajuns. Their 3rd largest in history happened to be against Elon. It would have been around 8th for the cajuns but the App fans are great. I also compared apples to apples to our largest crowds against in state FCS opponents SU and MSU and it wasn’t close. But all the App lovers came to their defense and keep making excuses for them.
There were no bowl opportunities available for the Cajuns in many of those 48 years. Playing by the rules App has played by for the last 7 years, for 48 years the Cajuns bowl appearances would have at least tripled.
