Default CFN: Top 11 G5 Expansion Candidates

    https://collegefootballnews.com/2022/07/...onferences

Saw this article about G5 expansion candidates and wondered why UL is not included. I wouldn't mind posting that UL should be added as a 12th school, commenting on each of the criteria. I imagine several other schools might want to claim that as well.

Here are the key categories …

Enrollment: At least 20,000. The school has to be big – no SMU.

Alumni Base: Where are the national eyeballs? In a streaming world, this is a big deal.

Media Market: This matters more than anything else.

US News & World Report Latest Ranking: How good is your school? This matters more than you might think.

AAU Member: Are you part of the Association of American Universities? This is a big deal to the Big Ten. To cut to the chase, no one on this list is.

Tier 1 Research: Are you an elite research school with all the stuff that comes with that? This one can be bent a little bit – Notre Dame isn’t, and Nebraska was, but isn’t now.

Stadium Size: Not a deal breaker, but having a big house is nice.

Why is UL not in consideration? Would anyone argue for/against UL?

4 of the schools are not Tier 1, yet still considered, i.e. Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, E. Carolina.

The major category UL is not meeting is enrollment. We have over 19,000 enrolled, but I'm not sure if that includes "on-line" students, which it should. We need to start showing 20,000 as a round figure, not just for this but for overall perception.

We seat over 41,000, so we have an on-campus stadium size than is right there with the top schools, the only larger one being E. Carolina. Only larger stadiums are pro stadiums.

Attendance is not a listed criteria.

I don't know what our alumni base and media market size are. Can someone post?

We are Tier 1, but not ranked as high under USN&WR, something that can be argued as not nearly a significant ranking.

Our location is a huge advantage.

    Likely P5 conference - Big 12.

US News and World Report is coming under scrutiny. Seems Columbia University got butt hurt and actually found discrepancies in their evaluations.

Carnegie and AAU are the relevant measures.

And our APR isn’t that great compared to the rest of the SBC.

Makes you wonder if you are smashed between NOLA, BR, and LC, if that is taken into account. People watch channels that are not based in their market. Also, our numbers are decent when we play on ESPN. Thoughts?

I don't get too excited, or upset about such articles. If you read CBS today, the Big 12 is reaching out to 6 PAC 12 programs. The Big 12 is in a better place than the PAC 12 after the loss of the Angeles Market. And that's with a reduced media rights on the horizon. The PAC 12 are having an emergency meeting to assest their upcoming media rights value. If more PAC 12 members such as Washington and Oregon jump ship to strengthen the Big 12, those mentioned in the article aren't going to be on the table with the Big 12.

Oregon will do whatever Phil Knight tells them to do. Nike' pulls a lot of weight, was really surprised Oregon didn't go with the Los Angles twins.

Hope Stanford ends up in the Big 12 simply because I like their band and mascot. I am sure their answer to LSU's "Neck" will be classic when they finally cross paths in football...on the level of Woodsy the Owl or the Alamo Bowl.

The Big 10 wanted the Los Angeles Market after consulting with media rights for the networks. Now they are awaiting Notre Dame's answer. Oregon and Washington could be next, but until Notre Dame makes their decision, there's no invitation at this point.

Notre Dame is holding the ACC hostage right now. The ACC could end up getting jobbed big time if ND goes to the Big 10 and the SEC raids a few teams. Then again, it may be part of the ESPN/Fox plan.

Since the Big10 is looking at media markets, I would think they might look at Stanford and Cal for the San Francisco / Silicon Valley market, not to mention AAU schools (a Big 10 criteria) as West Coast travel partners over Seattle and Portland.

    Enrollment for Fall 2021: 16,225

Enrollment has been in a downward trend.

    2011: 16,885
    2012: 16,687
    2013: 16,646
    2014: 17,195
    2015: 17,508
    2016: 17,519
    2017: 17,519
    2018: 17,297
    2019: 17,123
    2020: 16,993
    2021: 16,450
    2022: 16,225

These are fall numbers. The spring numbers are typically around 2,000 less.

Market viewing is only allocated to stations originating from that market. Acadiana ratings are measured on the various cable outlets as well as in market tv stations. Rarely does an out of market program make a dent in that particular markets ratings. You'd have to look at the program average numbers in LC, BR, and NOLA ratings. Not saying its impossible, but it is improbable. A rating is the percentage of all the viewing in a market to a particular show. So a 1 rating represents 1% of the total audiance (demo, age group) viewing TV at that time. Share is the % of viewing of all people in a demo viewing a particular program. So, its possible to have a .5 rating and a 10 share viewing UL football in these other markets. Local ratings do include cable games, like ESPN, viewing for that market.

Yes, we did well on ESPN, but those numbers posted were national viewing numbers, not local.
