University of Louisiana at Lafayette Police want to remind students and faculty that officers offer self-defense courses free of charge to any interested faculty and students.

"It can actually help them in the stressful situations where they could be attacked or anything of that nature," said Sgt. Michael Louviere with UL Lafayette Police.

The courses are geared toward women, but Sgt. Louviere says there are also options for men.

The reminder comes in the wake of three incidents this week near campus in which young men and women were either robbed or assaulted. The first happened March 24 at the corner of Stevenson and Taft streets. Lafayette Police say a 20 year old woman was approached by a man on a bike who was armed with a knife and demanding cash. Just minutes later a 25 year old man was held up by a similar suspect in the 900 block of Lamar Street.

Then early Tuesday morning a 20 year old woman was assaulted by a man as she left the Bulldog in the 100 block of General Mouton Avenue. The woman's purse was stolen in the attack. She was treated for minor injuries but is said to be doing alright.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call Lafayette Police at 232-TIPS. Meantime if you're a UL student or faculty member interested in a self-defense course, call UL Lafayette Police at 482-6447.
