Louisiana plated seven runs off nine hits in the first three innings and was never threatened in an 8-1 victory over Northwestern State Tuesday evening at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
The Ragin' Cajuns (13-12) ended the Demons' 12-game winning streak in non-conference play and kept their record above .500. Louisiana extended its winning streak over Northwestern State at "The Tigue" to five games.
Freshman Chase Traffica struck out five of the 12 batters he faced and scattered three hits over three innings in his third start of the season. He improved to 3-1 with the victory.
Taylor Hubbell, Dayton Marze, Blake Wascom, Randall Bulliard and Ryland Parker combined to hold NSU (16-7) to four hits in six innings of scoreless relief.
The Ragin' Cajuns return to Sun Belt play this weekend. UL will be in Miami for a three-game series against FIU which starts Friday at 6 p.m. (CDT).
Matt Goulas paced UL with three RBI. Chad Keefer went 2-for-4 with two RBI as he extended his team-high and career-best hitting streak to 17 games.
Lance Marvel started at designated hitter in place of Brian Bowman and delivered a 3-for-4 performance. Tyler Frederick posted a hit to stretch his hitting streak to 13 games.
Louisiana was a perfect 4-for-4 with a runner on third base and went 5-for-10 with RBI opportunities. UL pitchers held NSU to 1-for-10 with RBI opportunities.
The Ragin' Cajuns improved to 14-6 vs. NSU at "The Tigue" in the Tony Robichaux Era, 25-17 overall.
For the fourth straight game the Ragin' Cajuns opened a lead in the first inning.
A one-out double by Jordan Poirrier moved Alex Fuselier - who was hit by a pitch in the Cajuns' first at bat - to third base and gave UL a pair of runners in scoring position. Keefer followed with a single into left field to score them both.
A two-out double by Marvel was followed by a single to shallow right field by Goulas that scored the third run of the opening inning and chased NSU starting pitcher Andrew Adams from the game.
NSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Aaron Munoz doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out double by Oscar Garcia.
The Cajuns stretched out the lead with a four spot in the bottom of the third.
Singles from Frederick, Keefer and Marvel loaded the bases with one out. Goulas singled to left center to score Keefer and Frederick, then on the next at bat Justin Robichaux hit a hard grounder under the glove of NSU third baseman Chase Lyles to score Marvel and push the lead to 6-1.
A Greg Fontenot fielder's choice grounder scored Goulas to complete the scoring for the inning.
