BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -Those signs that describe the cost and scheduled completion date
of a highway project would disappear from roadsides, if lawmakers
agree to a proposal that received approval without objection from
the House Transportation Committee.
The signs are required under current law for any road project
that costs $1 million or more.
Rep. Rogers Pope, R-Denham Springs, said he proposed the measure
(House Bill 764) to do away with that requirement on behalf of the
state transportation department as a way to save money.
Information about highway construction costs still would be
posted on the Department of Transportation and Development's Web
site, said Roy Quezaire, legislative liaison for DOTD.
Quezaire said the signs costs $500 apiece and Pope's bill could
save thousands of dollars for the department annually that could be
plugged into construction. For example, Quezaire said 561 projects
will have been contracted from July 2009 until July 2010, and
cutting the signs would save DOTD more than $280,000 for that work.
The bill goes next to the House floor for debate.
