UL Softball Games of Interest this weekend

Houston's doubleheader sweep of aTm yesterday was a plus for us, adding 2 wins to the Opponent's Record portion of our RPI [Opponent's Record accounts for 50% of the RPI].

Since we played everyone in conference the same number of times, SBC series are essentially RPI neutral; however, we need Troy to win at least 1 against USA and a Troy sweep would be great.

Here are other series of interest to the Cajuns this weekend. The desired winners are marked with an * and series are listed in order of their possible impact on Louisiana's RPI. Number in brackets is maximum # of wins added to UL's Opponent's record portion of RPI.

    Texas*- Baylor [9]
    LSU*- MSU [6]
    Alabama* - Missouri [6]
    UAB* - UTEP [6]
    McNeese* - Nicholls [6 wins - 3 losses]
    Tulsa* - ECU [3]
    Lipscomb* - Bellaramine [3]
Portland St* - Weber St [3]
    UNT* - Marshall [3]
    Illinois* - Penn St [3]
    Indiana* - Nebraska [3]
    LaTech* - USM [3]
    St. Thomas* - NDSU [3]
St. Louis* - George Mason [3]
    Central CT* - Merrimack [3]
Eastern Illinois* - Tennessee Tech [3]

Why do we need this and why would it be great? If it's just because we don't like South Alabama, ok. If it actually helps us in some way, how would it help us?

Our magic number to clinch the # 1 seed in the conference tournament is 3. Obviously, if we sweep ULM we get it; a Troy sweep of USA also guarantees us the # 1 seed regardless of what we do against ULM.

That Troy - USA series doesn't matter if we win out. I just don't like USA. LOL

Understood. But I will give a different slant on what would actually help the Cajuns. South Alabama and Texas State have no margin for error in getting an at large bid. They need to sweep their victims this weekend and play and lose to the Cajuns in the conference tournament. I don't know how high that would get them in the rpi rankings, but they need to at least be in the top 50 to have legitimate consideration.

The Cajuns would look better to the committee if they are the champions of a league with multiple post season teams. Right now, they are borderline 2 or 3 seed. South Alabama's and Texas State's candidacy may be the push the Cajuns need to be a 2 seed.

I see the game against ULM today has been postponed until tomorrow, and tomorrows game shifted to Saturday as part of a double header with the scheduled Saturday game.

Interestingly, because of the way the Conference is awarding the regular season title, if our series rains out, we are the Champions and # 1 seed in the conference tournament, regardless of what USA does. Each of our games that rains out reduces our magic # by 1.

I agree with what you said. A Texas State sweep of UTA, and a USA sweep of Troy would be good for the conference, and possibly good for us.

    Yes if we sweep also.

I’m confused: what games were shifted? I see we are still scheduled to play UTA tomorrow, sat & sun.

In the original post, VObserver used the softball icon to indicate this is a softball thread. You are thinking baseball.

At this point, what would more favorable consideration from the committee result in? We won’t host regardless, so I’m wondering what else they could offer

I also ask, only because I don't know.

I also don't know how the selection process transpires; I know they will have the top 16 teams selected first because they are host sites. But after that, do they pick 17 - 64 in order? If that is the case, they would have already selected the Cajuns before any other SBC schools are selected. If they use the prior year as a guide, we are good because there were four SBC teams selected.

I agree that it looks better for the conference if we have more teams selected. I am just not sold that "helps" us any.

I hope I get educated because I need it!
