It’s catch 22. Safety base will be an issue for the first baseman planting against it when receiving throws and stretching out. Replay will have a field day.

I rewatched it on ESPN later and they speculated that she turned towards second and was tagged out, but I don’t remember the ball going back to first base at all. She was lying way outside of the first base line, not in the field of play. It doesn’t seem like she turned towards second.

Of course, the important thing is, hopefully she’s ok, but I was just wondering, what did Jay say on the radio about why she was called out?
    Runners/Coach interferance.

They would plant against the base, not against the safety base.

Wouldn't your injury have happened even with the current safety base?
No it would not have happened.

Why not? The safety base is for preventing collisions, unless it is flat the same situation would have occurred. Is the safety bag softer and different from the regular first base?

No it wouldn't. Google softball safety base.

From what I understand, safety bases would help avoid the base runner and 1B-men feet getting tangled/collisions. The safety base would not help in the instances where base runners are taking the that long last step and hit the base awkwardly.

I don't see any real downside to the type of bases (in softball or baseball) except for potentially making close calls at 1B more difficult. Umpire angles a little different, more surface area to block vision of foot actually touching, etc.

Hayden was called out because Coach Robichaux touched while the ball was still live. There was no runners interference. While technically the right call, I do not think that is the rule's intent. The rule is in place, so the coach does not aid the runner.

That is exactly correct. Justin interfered. In that case, a stupid rule.

How do you know it's her ankle?

Thanks for the accurate take on what actually happened on the play.

I agree that the rule is not in place for when a coach assists an injured player outside the base paths.

But sometimes a rule has unintended consequences.

Exactly, it avoids the collision. I don't see how it helps with an awkward step trying to reach the bag unless it were to be flat.
