State lawmakers will be spending lots of time in Baton Rouge over the next few months. Louisiana's Regular Session got underway Monday and with budget cuts happening all over the place, it's now a matter of getting business done with less money.
Governor Jindal says the financial troubles present an opportunity to change the way the state does business. Jindal also said taxpayers should not feel the budget strains of the government saying, "during tough budgetary times, during a tough economy, every government must decide whether we're wiling to make the tough choices within government so we don't force this burden on the families and businesses of this state."
Acadiana lawmakers back the governor's thoughts and know that local residents aren't ready to sacrifice certain expenses. "I'm just going to fight to make sure we minimize on the budget cuts that affect my district, more so probably our education," said Ledricka Thierry, Representative from Opelousas.
Lawmakers will have about 3 months to either make cuts or adjust spending to stay within Jindal's 2010 budget. The legislative session endsil June 21.
