Did Michigan St go from a winner to a loser under Saran? Is that what you mean by failure? Where were they the 2 years prior to Nicks arrival? Cleveland would be BellaCheats failure not Nicks.

Bud Wilkinson wants a word with you. 145-29-4 in 17 seasons at Oklahoma, including 3 national championships, 13 consecutive conference championships, the longest consecutive win streak [47 games] in history and 11 consecutive seasons with 1 or fewer losses.

I only count modern college football 1970 and beyond. The other deserve a separate list just because the game was so different.

True. Once they changed holding rules, passing games exploded.

Plus half your team wasn't fighting in a war or missing games because it was time to harvest the corn.

I understand and respect your perspective. I don't think any universities really had Saban on the top of their list until his 9-2 season. He was 23-22-1 overall and 17-14-1 in the B10 in his 1st four seasons. That kind of record probably gets you fired these days after four seasons.

Saban is one of the greatest (if not the greatest of all time), and the reason he is at the top is because he has adapted and improved. The first four years at Michigan State were average (so my use of failure was probably too strong), at best.

I would agree. The use of failure was probably too strong but in relation to the type of season expected out of him now, you could argue they were and I think most people knew what you were getting at.

Those days ended in 1945 for the war thing and in 1941 for the harvest. The reason offensive numbers soared was rules changes that invariably favored the offense. It was no easier to win games in 1947 than it was in 2017.

1970s is where we got division, scholarship limits and integration through the south. The game changed completely and became 10x harder to win games.

You really think it's the same defending a veer vs a RPO
