Thread: Here goes

Another team no one is mentioning that is on borrowed time at QB is Tampa Bay. Tom may have come out of retirement, but this guy is going to hit the wall. The odds of that happening this year are incredibly stacked against him. Tampa's management is in lala land if they don't understand this.

Mariotta and Trubisky are stop gaps for this year at Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Everyone is in agreement that the 2023 draft is going to be much stronger at QB then this year. Teams are positioning themselves to have a starting QB this year, if one of the top 4 fall to them they will take a chance, but as it has been proven in the past no matter if you are a sure thing (Ryan Leaf) or a late rounder (Tom Brady) their are not sure bets in the NFL at QB. Their are a ton of Ryan Leaf's and a ton of Tom Brady stories in the NFL, maybe not to those extremes but similar stories. What teams know is that Mariotta is capable and so is Trubisky of at least starting in the NFL, they don't know if Willis, Howell, Pickett or Ridder will be worth the pick. At least they know what they are getting with Mariotta and Trubisky. The rookies are a crap shoot.

Atlanta and Seattle had to make those moves and here is why, if Mariotta isn't on the roster in Atlanta the starting QB is Felipe Franks and if Trubisky isn't on the roster for Pittsburgh the options are Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins. I take Mariotta and Trubisky over any of those guys. Now with that being said either of them could look to draft one of those guys in the 2022 draft or what might be a better idea is to play this year with who you have and then make a move in the 2023 draft to get what is more of a sure thing since most of the 2022 guys are not sure things. Seattle has no option but to draft one this year, they are going into the season with Drew Lock, Geno Smith and Jacob Eason. They do not want to start this year with Drew Lock as their #1 guy.

Carolina probably takes a QB, because they are not sold on Sam Darnold, but now they will have two guys to chose from.

Atlanta probably stays put with Mariotta in the first round and someone slips down to the 2nd and they can get him they might.

I think the Steelers might take a flyer on a QB, so you might see them reach for Willis on this pick.

Detroit takes a QB in the 1st round. Either with their first pick in the 1st round but probably with their later pick which will be between whomever is the best left between Willis/Pickett/Ridder/Coral and/or Howell.

    Just my .02.

Atlanta and Seattle look for 2nd round or beyond guys.

This draft kind of reminds me of the last time the experts said there weren't any QBs worth a first round pick. I believe that was 2017. And they weren't too far off with the exception of a guy named Patrick Mahomes & Desean Watson. Mahomes' success has been well chronicled & one would think Watson learned how to hang the moon since being drafted by the great Houston Texans. I have a feeling this draft won't be much different than that draft. Since all the emphasis is how Malik Willis has become the greatest QB ever since last season, someone is going to be gullible enough to take him. Enter the Falcons. Your scenario about the falcons would make sense had they not traded a franchise QB to Indy for a third round pick. And like it or not, now that he's no longer a Falcon I can admit he was a franchise QB. Otherwise, they would have never beaten the Saints any time during his tenure with that team.

I agree with your thoughts on Seattle. They have put themselves in a must draft now scenario with their trade. But they are basically in the same spot as Atlanta except they got so much more for their franchise QB than Atlanta did.

Pittsburgh is in better shape than either of the other two & they have the organizational stability to wait on "their guy" falling to them, although one can hope. The lions aren't as stupid as they used to be. They might take a QB in the first, but it won't be with their first first. They could be the big winners in all of this if they get Ridder with the last pick of the round. Coincidently Detroit is my pick to win the NFC north next season.

On what planet do you think Tampa doesn't realize this? He's like 65. You think it hasn't crossed their mind they need to be finding someone for after?

I guess we will see come draft time. They didn't attempt to address it during free agency.

Not that he is the future there but Kyle Trask wad taken in the 2nd round by the Bucs in 2021. That was a move toward the future. Now it might not work out but when you use a 2nd round pick on a QB you are hoping he is the future not just a camp arm.

Great point, a big tough guy with a big arm sitting under the goat for two years.

With Brady coming back, they could afford to wait till the next draft that's expected to be better for QBs and free agent cycle.

I’m not very high on this QB class and I’m very high on jameis.

So I don’t see the need for a qb.

With that being said I think the best qb in this draft will be a 3rd rounder .

Sam Howell is getting overlooked big time . His oline last year was atrocious but this guy has it all . He runs a 4.5 , is tough and has a big accurate arm

The feeling amongst other NFL GM's is the Saints made the move to draft two starters in the Top 20 players, preferably a WR and OL. It will save money because they won't have to sign veteran free agents to fill those positions and they can lock them up on rookie contracts for the next 4 to 5 years.

If everything works out for them, I'm confident neither pick will be used on a QB. If Shaun Peyton was still HC, I wouldn't be as confident in the front office filling other positions.

Does anyone believe that Atlanta wants to start the season with Marcus Mariota at QB? I don't. And Pittsburgh doesn't have their QB question settled by any means. They might try to move up in this draft if Willis & Pickett come off the board early. While I hate the thought of the Saints trading up for a QB. I like the threat of them trading up for a QB to get others to trade up for a QB thereby solidifying their chances of getting an OT & WR.
Not that they are a great answer, but I expect Baker Mayfield and Jimmy G to be moved thus filling some of these voids.

I am just speculating, but these guys must have some big guaranteed money coming to them that nobody wants to pay, or at least contracts no one wants to trade for. In Mayfield's case the Browns may not be to hot to get rid of him just yet due to Watson's situation. I'm so glad the Saints didn't get him. Great player, but way too much baggage, money, draft capital to loose for a guy who has way to much stuff hanging over his head.
