Mariotta and Trubisky are stop gaps for this year at Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Everyone is in agreement that the 2023 draft is going to be much stronger at QB then this year. Teams are positioning themselves to have a starting QB this year, if one of the top 4 fall to them they will take a chance, but as it has been proven in the past no matter if you are a sure thing (Ryan Leaf) or a late rounder (Tom Brady) their are not sure bets in the NFL at QB. Their are a ton of Ryan Leaf's and a ton of Tom Brady stories in the NFL, maybe not to those extremes but similar stories. What teams know is that Mariotta is capable and so is Trubisky of at least starting in the NFL, they don't know if Willis, Howell, Pickett or Ridder will be worth the pick. At least they know what they are getting with Mariotta and Trubisky. The rookies are a crap shoot.
Atlanta and Seattle had to make those moves and here is why, if Mariotta isn't on the roster in Atlanta the starting QB is Felipe Franks and if Trubisky isn't on the roster for Pittsburgh the options are Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins. I take Mariotta and Trubisky over any of those guys. Now with that being said either of them could look to draft one of those guys in the 2022 draft or what might be a better idea is to play this year with who you have and then make a move in the 2023 draft to get what is more of a sure thing since most of the 2022 guys are not sure things. Seattle has no option but to draft one this year, they are going into the season with Drew Lock, Geno Smith and Jacob Eason. They do not want to start this year with Drew Lock as their #1 guy.
Carolina probably takes a QB, because they are not sold on Sam Darnold, but now they will have two guys to chose from.
Atlanta probably stays put with Mariotta in the first round and someone slips down to the 2nd and they can get him they might.
I think the Steelers might take a flyer on a QB, so you might see them reach for Willis on this pick.
Detroit takes a QB in the 1st round. Either with their first pick in the 1st round but probably with their later pick which will be between whomever is the best left between Willis/Pickett/Ridder/Coral and/or Howell.
Just my .02.
Atlanta and Seattle look for 2nd round or beyond guys.
