Calin Postea (prononuced kah-lean poe-stair), who in both matches last weekend (March 5-6) helped the Ragin' Cajuns clinch the doubles point and also finished first in singles to open a 2-0 match lead, has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
The award, announced on Wednesday (March 9, 2022), is the first weekly honor of Postea's collegiate career. It's the third overall for Louisiana in the spring 2022 dual match season, as Postea joins teammates Karlo Kajin (Feb. 9) and Oriol Fillat Gimenez (Feb. 16) in being honored by the league.
In Saturday's Sun Belt Conference opener vs. Coastal Carolina, with doubles play evened at 1-all, Postea and his partner Kacper Dworak stormed back from a 6-2 deficit in the tiebreaker to win the final six points and capture an 8-6 win over Niccolo Rossi and Bastien Huon, securing the doubles point for Louisiana (13-1, 1-0 SBC).
Postea kept the momentum going for Louisiana against the Chanticleers in singles play when he finished first, claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daiki Tanabe to ensure Louisiana wouldn't fall behind.
The next afternoon at New Orleans, it was Postea once again factoring into Louisiana clinching the doubles point and laying claim to a 2-0 match lead.
Postea finished the weekend with a perfect 2-0 mark in singles, winning in straight sets both times, and was undefeated with two point-clinchers in doubles action.
In his debut season with the Ragin' Cajuns, Postea is off to a 10-2 start in singles play having won his last four outings. The vast majority of his decisions have come at No. 5 and No. 6 singles (combined 9-2 record). He and his parter Dworak stand 6-4 in doubles action competing at the No. 3 position.
No. 37 Louisiana is back at home on the playing surface of Cajun Courts on Friday, March 11 hosting UTRGV (1-9). First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
