The March 9th ITA NCAA Men's tennis rankings are out and although the Cajuns went 2-0 last week, they lost 1 spot in the rankings, they have fallen from 37 to 38. Most of this is because of the teams they played, defeating USM and UNO (even though UNO has a great record, they just haven't played anyone good, until us). This is a little disappointing that we fell 1 spot, but not something to get upset about. Here are some other interesting teams and where they are ranked.
#5 Baylor--We had a match postponed with them early in the year, I have stated, I don't believe this match will be played, but it is still showing as postponed, so we will have to see.
#33 Texas Tech--Cajuns best win of the season, a 4-1 victory over Big 12 opponent and a top 35 team.
#38 Louisiana--At 13-1 no matter what this is a great season.
#42 Old Dominion--A future SBC opponent and good to see them in the top 50.
#50 LSU--The highest ranked Louisiana school behind UL.
#54 FAU--UL will play them the last match of the regular season, we need to keep them in the Top 75 and then beat them the week before conference tournament weekend.
#60 UTSA--Another solid win for the Cajuns, they have split with them, losing the first match, but winning the second.
#62 Tulane--One of 3 Louisiana teams ranked.
#73 ETSU--Another really good win for the Cajuns
As I stated, I am disappointed that the Cajuns fell one spot, but not surprised. The Cajuns will have a chance to stay on the winning track as they will face UTRVG, for those that don't know this is the former UT-Pan American, the merged with UT-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College to form the current UTRVG (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley). Many of us older folks are familiar with UTPA as they were a member of the American South and SBC from 81-97 when they became and independent, they now are in the WAC.
UTRVG is not a very good tennis team, they are 1-9 on the season they have played a rough schedule including TCU, Texas Tech, Rice, UTSA, aTm-Corpus Christi twice, Incarnate Word and Oklahoma State twice. Their only win has been against D2 St. Mary's Rattlers from San Antonio.
This match is not going to do much for the Cajuns ranking, but it does set up some nice matches in conference play the next weekend vs UTA and following weekend vs Georgia State and Georgia Southern.
