Carson Roccaforte and Kyle DeBarge each drove in three runs and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns collected season-highs with 11 hits and eight stolen bases in holding off Northwestern State in a wild midweek contest, 11-8, on Tuesday at Brown-Stroud Field.
Drew Shifflet (1-0) pitched three innings and fanned five in earning his first victory for Louisiana (4-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-0 in midweek games.
Louisiana opened with a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of groundouts before Northwestern State (3-4) took a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the frame on Bo Willis' grand slam.
Nobody goes to Omaha with a 5.00 ERA.
Talley goes out in horrible weather and throws 50+ pitches. Then they trot him out on 2 days rest for a midweek game against NW St on 2 days rest. Same for Schultz. Same for Shifflet.
Starting to see why though. They’re desperate for pitching. Losing Marshall is a much bigger deal than we think. Still can’t figure out why LaFleur hasn’t gotten more innings.
Without Durke being a reliable piece, it changes everything on the weekend.
Southern Miss is very legit. 5-2 with a 1.88 team ERA. 0.288 BA, 0.416 Slug. They outscore opponents more than 2 to 1. We give up exactly one run more than we score, so far. They haven't played anyone very good though, but they throw strikes. By Sunday we will know a lot more. Oh, UNO (next week) is no cupcake either.
I actually think we’re comparable teams. Especially playing at the Tigue, gives us a slim advantage.
I think we will miss Max in lineup. Encouraged by Will Veillon’s play and seems like Hoodie is coming around.
Personally, I would have never moved off of Shifflet on Friday. It’s obvious that Ray belongs somewhere in the weekend rotation and I’d probably piece together Sunday with Willis/Havard then pen.
Just don’t see the options on the mound right now. We have to get A+ efforts out of about 3-4 guys to beat good teams.
