Yup. Followed that up with his last winning season (16-12) as a college head coach.

The arena was called the "Curry Hicks Cage." The chant "Rage in the Cage"was used all the time there, not just when we played there. But they had Tee shirts for sale that said "The Final Rage."

The game in Amherst was close. It was a four point game with two minutes to go and we lost by ten. Just had no answer for Roe.

When UMASS came to the Dome they were ranked #1. Camby did not play. UMASS scored the first 15 points of the game. We stayed around the 15 point mark for most of the contest, but then they scored the final 15 points. That game was two years after the game in Amherst. That was actually Marty's worst year. I think we were 7-21 or something like that.

Marty would do ANYTHING to get on national television. There were very few opportunities 25 years ago. So the game was on a Friday night at midnight. We were in the middle of conference play. The next morning we flew to Nashville for a Sunday afternoon contest vs. Western Kentucky. We tipped off 37 hours after the start of the UMASS game. We got h-a-m-m-e-r-e-d. I think it was something like 121-92. And, Marty said he'd do it all over again for the TV exposure.

Our vantage point at "The Cage" was upstairs and at the corner of one baseline. There was a drunk college student who came up to us and made believe he was messing with equipment. Don Allen gave him "the look" and asked if he wanted to stay for the game. The kid did it again, Don got security and the young man was escorted out. He was about to cry.

That Cajun team was the one in the middle of the two championship teams. Todd Hill was a senior, Michael Allen and Starks were juniors. Western Kentucky, led by Darnell Mee, went to the Sweet 16 and lost to Florida State.

What a great kid. Spent some time talking with him this weekend and couldn’t be more excited for him. He’s very interested in the festivals and culture in Lafayette as well. Seemed to love the environment and was just embracing the surroundings.
