Thread: Cajun Field Construction

  1. Default Re: Cajun Field update

Why discuss fundraising in Lafayette? Look at attendance numbers in Houston (even Rice this football season). If you engaged the folks in Texas, you'd do well. We want to support, but the drive hurts our attendance. There's money here...just ask.

By the way, a lady came to my office years ago and got me to donate big. Once - that's it. Seems that $50 gas bill was worth it, if she met a couple of us.

In the words of the Reverend Maynard, "You see a bunch of _____h0les that lived in this part of the building here, but we systematically removed them like you would any kind of termite or roach." I still think it's possible here, and there is evidence to show this. Call in the exterminators.

Instead of having the complete package of a major university, we remain a small time, G5 program. Unable to realize and take the window to the world approach, we cut back as we always do and everything falls back to a state of mediocrity. We had everything going for us, a Top 20 program, national recognition as Louisiana and Tier 1 academic status to continue to build on. Instead, we took a giant step backwards, not in the coach we selected but in our failure to fund and market. We have one of our own, a UL football great as our coach, he is from Acadiana, he is a Cajun and we need to market the hell out of that, properly fund athletics and finish the stadium project as part of our campus building and beautification. Athletics will never become self-supporting unless the university first invests in it. We keep doing things ass backwards. Do that first and we will recoup our investment once we achieve success and our fans and alumni buy into it.
Too many "what" people; not enough "why" people.
The WHY explains the WHAT, especially in this particular case.

Attitude reflects leadership. Blasé attitude toward progression in this administration for 100 years, with regard to athletics. Wonder why the fanbase is blasé.... It's not rocket science.

Maggard is leading athletics into a death spiral. He is ultimately responsible to get our budget higher, he is responsible for fundraising. The RCAF is under his leadership. Ticket sales is under his leadership. Game day experience is under his leadership.

Why do we have less than 2K RCAF members—look no further than the RCAF board of directors. What are they doing to get membership up? Nothing……look at who is on the board of directors…the ultimate social club (more then the rebounders club) is the RCAF board of directors…maggard has hand picked the board of directors.

Bingo. You have said that over and over again.

Our "suck ass" fans didn't have a problem opening their wallet to Lotief & Robe when it came to donations for even the most basic ____ that Martin Hall wouldn't pay for. Our "horrible" fans sure don't have a problem showing up in droves on the road when our (usually) nationally relevant diamond sports are playing elsewhere. Our "loser" fans don't struggle to sell out of season tickets, DESPITE 7 year hiatus from postseason play (in baseball's case).

There is a reason for that. Tony built baseball. The Lotief's & what's her name built softball, DESPITE Martin Hall or the athletic department. OUR SUCK ASS fanbase built those pearls, and that's why the fanbase is so strong, participatory, loyal, gracious, mostly trusting and supportive of the diamond sports.
How they think the new scoreboard and outfield wall at Lamson Park got replaced. Wasn't because of Martin Hall.

Do you think Maggard has autonomy with regard to any of that? If you do, I have some ocean front property in Arizona for sale. Maggard answers to Martin Hall and the Foundation. Bryan can only do what he is allowed to do.

Whose job is it to get our budget higher? Is that not Maggard’s responsibility? He oversees the RCAF. He oversees every aspect of the athletic program. We keep complaining about the same things for the last several years with no improvement…..if he truly has no power to run the department, fire him and save $400k per year.

You think that is his pay? It doesn’t matter if he gets the budget hire if they take money from sports to bring over to the academic side.

If you want more money raised, then start by donating more money and direct it to where you want it spent. Maggard has had to survive coming off of two covid years of reduced revenues and having to reduce his budget. No different than many other G5 programs with shrinking economies outside of Texas, Florida, Georgia and a few other states.

I've always said if you want to grow athletics further, then they would have to stop beating the same RCAF top donors to death and raise corporate money. The fact that they have been able to raise corporate money for the stadium in this environment has been surprising. We've had two top notch ADs in my lifetime, Terry Don Phillips and Bryan Maggard. When he's gone, fans are going to wish he was still here. He's not perfect, but given the Culture he has had to deal with in Martin Hall, he's accomplished more than any of his predecessors. People have a short memory of all the dysfunctional and unqualified people that have run the UL athletic department over the years.

Same here. Between those two gentlemen, nobody has come close.
