Thread: Mid Majors vs. Transfer Portal

Default Mid Majors vs. Transfer Portal

Will mid majors just become a breading ground for P5 schools ? Almost looking like a Minor League farm system with players going to the highest bidder after 1 - 2 years at a mid major. This has already gone too far and to the point where it's too late to turn back. Terrible for NCAA athletics.

Not when you consider the talent available in the portal to back fill anyone leaving. All sorts of reasons why players want out...get closer to home, better school, girlfriends, playing time, its not all about the $$$.

It could go spectacularly wrong for many P5's whacking the piñata. Let's take Mekhi Garner. Going to LSU. He has not seen anywhere near the caliber of WR's while playing here. He has one offseason, and previously attained bad habits to deal with. If he starts...he's going to be brutalized by the SEC. That goes for everyone but the RB's. The learning curve is going to destroy them...and they will regret it. Karma...is a _____.

If his aspirations are the NFL, then he will eventually need to test himself against the best. Good luck to him.

    What could go wrong?

They just took a starter from an in-state school that has been ranked ahead of them for two consecutive seasons. I’d say it is a win for them regardless if the player contributes or not, worst case they stole a big contributor from a competing school. No real loss for the big money schools if he doesn’t pan out, on to the next kids. The player is the one who will have regret if it doesn’t work out.

It depends how you look at it.

Everything in the recruiting wars is a fixed length straw.

They sign a player on one end and spit one out on the other end.

Kinda like getting an OL from a Michigan school.

I really hate to see a player leave UL and move to a lesser performing program. Never thought I’d see the day UL could actually say that and be fact about State.

People said the same thing about Tracy Walker. He's more than holding his own in Detroit.

There are some first year dynamics going on with the transfer portal (no one year sit out) and NIL. There is definitely some gluttony going on right now, which is not unexpected, but I would expect it to level out over the next two years.

The reason it will level out is there will be a lot more information on both sides on what is true and not, as well as, what is working and what is not.

I really don't see any significant changes on NIL, but perhaps the transfer portal rules can be adjusted.

It will come down to if the P5s feel there are more pros than cons for them.

This could work out to UL's advantage on getting quality players out of high school.

"Not getting the offers you want?

"Louisiana can get you the best exposure in the country."

    NFL caliber exposure.

The top P5's have nothing to lose all to gain, the G5's lose their best starters each year. Sounds like G5's won't be able to compete on the field, especially against P5's. Another plus for the P5's. UL is now essentially a Junior College athletically with a R1 designated University academically.

In LSU's particular case, they are so depleted at CB, that Garner is a good pickup for them, as they need depth and quality.

In general, I agree with your points, especially if a G5 'stud' is going to P5 powerhouse.

Of all the transfers, I think Bailey could be the biggest winner. He could be the featured back, at a P5 school. I am not sure of Des' thoughts on rotating RB's, so that could be a big benefit for him.
