Guess it depends on who you ask. According to USA Today, he was a 3-star coming out. Here's what MSU's website says:

In any event, looks like a good pickup for UL who can contribute right away. Word was he was going to compete for a starting role as a junior. And he's no dumb jock either. I like the pickup.
