Thread: Daunting task,

  1. #1

    Default Daunting task,

As I watch the change from Napier to Desormeaux, the realization I come to of how daunting of a challenge Des actually faces becomes more apparent.

Did I expect so many support personnel to follow Napier to Florida? No, but it wasn’t because I felt Napier had some loyalty, it was my misguided belief that we didn’t have that many top tier people working for us.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciated the work they were doing, but didn’t realize it was SEC-level work.

For the immediate future, it is CMD’s ability to hire top notch people on and off the field, that will keep the cULture going more than any X’s & O’s, in the Spring.

He has the same budget as Napier

What will be interesting if the lack of connections hurts him. Sure he will lean on Napier for these first round of hires.

Agree, curious to see how far those tentacles spread when hiring coaches and support staff. Will he be able to crab folks from other schools like previous coaches did or will all their paths have gone through UL and Louisiana. Talking more about the new hires than those that were retained from Billy’s staff. Very crucial time in the young career of coach Des

    He won't need connections.

    Qualified candidates will reach out.

The daunting task will be in identifying the most qualified and capable teachers.

I agree. Plus the coaching profession at this level is a pretty small one and my guess is that there’s less than 3° of separation from 95% of the coaches. Des Will know someone who knows someone.

All those jobs are posted on the UL Careers/HR site. I would encourage you RPCA folks to take a look at the job details and requirements...eye opening

Money definitely isn’t the concern. Connections get you applicants with valued references, which can diminish risk. However, I see this as a pure test of management ability. Hiring is the life blood of any organization. Coach Des has a lot of hiring to do that is more important than coaching, at this time.

He has to be right a lot more than he is wrong at this, so I am fine with him taking his time to make the right hires. Obviously there is an urgency to some, but definitely not all.

I think the situation could’ve been worse with a different hire. Every person Coach Napier took with him, would’ve been gone regardless, along with probably Coach Des, as well as most of the current coaching staff not being retained.

Agree with most of this, however, sometimes the best candidate needs to be recruited. Identifying those and selling them on the opportunity, that is special.

Katie Turner is a name that comes to mind. Napier was able to get her from the Buffalo Bills I believe. Not exactly the same job, but he must have laid out a very good vision of the opportunity for her.

She was not even in sports at the time. Napier knew her from their time at Bama together

S &C has to be hired this week... everything else does not have to be rushed.
