The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has achieved the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning’s elite R1 designation.
That places 'Louisiana' among the nation’s top tier of public and private research institutions, those with “very high research activity,” according to Carnegie.
About 3%, or 137, of the nation’s colleges and universities have R1 status, which is synonymous with academic excellence, research, innovation and global impact.
A statement from the University follows. “The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is excited to have achieved R1 status and to take our place among the top tier of the nation’s research universities.
“The designation by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning is recognition of the strength of our research program. It is a tribute to the faculty, staff, and student researchers whose work has pushed the bounds of scholarship and innovation and drawn significant national and international attention to the University and to the region it is proud to serve."
Carnegie bases a university’s status on several factors, including its annual research expenditures, the size of its research staff with terminal degrees, and the number of doctoral degrees it awards each year.

Heck son, somebody in athletic communications needs to put that in tomorrow’s game notes.
And our administration needs to drive this into the legislature’s forehead with a wacky packer. EARNED SEPARATION!!!
Now somebody needs to pull their cranium out their colon at Martin Hall…Baylor, UTSA and Memphis already have press releases 22 hours old on this.
Absolutely a benchmark we should be shouting from the rooftops. Yet, go Google it. Nothing…
Plus visiting professors of some repute. Strength of research. Financial strength. Plus a feel by the committee that you deserve it. Like the CFP but with data.
An awful lot of people worked to earn this. But would not have happened without our research profs. They have done an amazing job growing our graduate and research programs.
Now if someone on the CSSN board could go to the CUSA board and congratulate UTSA and just happen to mention UL and wait for a mutt response before mentioning them, could be priceless.
Nm
UL needs to send this out beyond the usual e-mail list. It’s good for the entire state.

This is an almost unbelievable accomplishment that this great university has sustained.
The only other universities in the state that have this are LSU and Tulane.
Wonder what programs LSU wants to steal now…
