I used to get that on the radio show all the time. How patronizing can you get.
They "root for all state schools" until they get threatened. Then they are as vile as any fans.
But it's the ones that said they "supported" all state schools. I'd hammer them on that one by asking them to identify support. Then I'd ask if they bought LSU tickets. They didn't call back.
It's like Skip Bertman was. He wanted everyone in the state to have a nice house, baseball wise. But he'd be damned if someone tried to have a house nicer than his.
Whenever someone tells me that they pull for “all state schools” I engage with them about general wins/losses that happened over the previous weekend. 9/10 can’t tell me who any other school played let alone the outcome. That’s when I tell them “Are you sure? You don’t even know who they played. You’re not really a fan of other schools.“ They then look at me very perplexed and confused.
As the 1980's band Spandau Ballet so eloquently put it. "This much is true, this much is true-hoo-hoo".
When someone says they pull for all state schools that just means, I pull for who I pull for (LSU most likely) and hope the others win, but don't really know or care if they do or not. Usually the only way they know is at the end of the season if that team is in a bowl and or playoffs (FCS) and accidently catch the game on TV or on the news. They don't actually pull for all state schools, they just don't pull against them.
I am honest about my fandom. I am a Cajun fan first, I pull for my Cajuns and pull for them. After that, I will be honest when I say I don't pull for any other state schools in FBS (LSU, Tulane, La Tech or ULM) to win, in fact I hope they all lose, it doesn't effect my day, like UL winning or losing does, but I do not pull for them to win. I do on the other hand follow and pull for our FCS counterparts to win when they are not playing us. I think I have a pecking order with these teams, because they play each other so often, but since they are not in any way usually challenging the Cajuns, I don't want them to lose. My pecking order would be:
Nichols
SLU
Northwestern
Southern
Grambling
McNeese
"I support all state schools" is just code speech for "I'm a die hard LSU fan" they use that to deflect...
Can't I be a casual fan for all state schools, even SUNO and Dillard?
Signed, Casual Inclusion Fan
People have stopped bringing up the “pull for all schools” when talking to me because they know I’ll set them straight. It’s gotten to the point where my wife will explain to them before I have to say anything. When she brings up that I can’t stand LSU because of politics, sexual assault coverups, & domestic abuse investigations they don’t even try to respond. Most LSU fans deflect everything when I bring up those things on Facebook. One said I was on a crusade and wouldn’t answer when I asked if he supports covering up sexual assault.
Now I do pull for & attend games at Southeastern football, Southern baseball, & UNO baseball because I have former players on their rosters.
I support only 1 state school. I grew up and live in the Baton Rouge area. Nearly everyone around me supports LSU. I have my undergraduate degree from Louisiana and my masters from LSU. I attended LSU because my professional degree wasn’t offered at UL. I decided a long time ago that LSU wasn’t my family or consistent with my values. I am 100% a Ragin’ Cajun!
I believe that’ I pull for other state schools can be true, regardless of support, or knowledge of. For example I occasionally cared about the Hoax with Joe Profit. That’s me pulling for Louisiana kids. Profit https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Profit , Vida Blue https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vida_Blue who never played a day of college baseball, for example. I rarely pay attention to those other teams record of the day.
