Thread: Fellow UL coaches react to the Mike Desormeaux hire

  1. UL Football Fellow UL coaches react to the Mike Desormeaux hire

Few people are more connected to the Ragin’ Cajuns moreso than new head coach Mike Desormeaux.

Desormeaux is qualified just leave it at that.

    Native son: Irrelevant.

    UL alum: Irrelevant.

The "experience" came to him: relevant.

I just remember David Walker saying the best thing about the Errol Rogers hiring was that "he was Ragin' Cajun alumni." Turns out that was the best thing about ER as a coach.

I don't like the native son aspect at hiring time. Basking in it years down the road? Geaux for it.

It’s an interesting fact. Nobody that matters thinks it’s a qualification. Quit tilting strawmen of your own making.

Hey, “he is one of us” apparently won the tigas’ a NC because if you look at all of what the message boards media and #knowitalls have to say now, that apparently was his only qualification as a coach when he was hired, in hindsight . . .

I don't know anything about your strawmen projection, otherwise we are in total agreement.

I just remember when that sort of thing mattered to, and influenced former Athletic Director David Walker's hiring process.

Desormeaux is qualified. That is all that matters.

If he emigrated from Mars it would probably be mentioned prominently also.

Well, I agree, we shouldn't automatically hire our own. In the past, I suspect we did that because we were offering so little, our alums were the only people who would take the job.

But again, some of those alums have been our best coaches.

You have to do your homework, and you have to pay for a quality program. But after you've done those two, if one of the top candidates is your own alum, someone you've been able to observe and evaluate for years, and therefore someone you know well...

...then, to me that seems like the logical choice.

Actually, I was just thinking about that. New Iberia has tended to go their own way, and I know that at times, UL has faced resistance in growing our support there. Some of that goes back to resentment over the failed effort to split USL in the early 1970's, and to put the junior division campus in New Iberia.

So I was wondering if Dez will help improve our presence there, and improve relations between Lafayette & New Iberia.

    Is that where you're from?

There has been a few coaches from Louisiana that has coached at UL and been very successful. Broadhead currently women’s basketball coach also the late great tony robicheaux men’s baseball and also Yvette Giruard women’s softball coach and who made UL softball a powerhouse maybe Mike can move the needle even more for football as well and I can see mike staying for a longtime.
