It’s called…progress. An AD cannot rest on his laurels and think he can just call “next man up” and expect everything to work like it always did. That’s a fools errand. An AD at a G5 cannot be afraid to start over or go in a different direction.
Bustle was better than Baldwin, Hud was better than Bustle, Napier was better than Hud. Napier’s way of doing things will not be the end all/be all of how to run a G5 program. More than one way to skin a cat. Hiring Des, reeks of being afraid to try something else and getting a better/worse result.
I think Billy’s opinion on who should be next is moot. His eyes where always on a bigger job. To be honest, he’s a coach. I’m sure he enjoyed his time here, but this wasn’t ever, EVER, where he wanted to be. He punched the clock, until he got his promotion.
I think Maggard was sold a bill of goods by Billy telling Maggard exactly what he wanted to hear. Of course Des can do it. You can’t hold G5 coaches looking for their dream job to some moral superiority. It’s not in the job description. If Napier really felt an emotional connection, he’d stay.
We have shown we can sustain the G5 version of it and be very successful. Golding definitely had access to the system, doesn’t mean he can implement it.
Dr Maggard is making a decision he feels is best for the program. He may be wrong, but he isn’t basing it off some wild idea. He is basing it on his gut feel, after seeing Des in many situations over the past 5-6 years, along with interviewing other top candidates.
The advantages of a new play caller & head coach to go along with the same exact terminology & a veteran team should easily surpass the largest point output of the season, while still playing fundamentally sound football ( IE no bad turnovers & stupid penalties). If Mike is what he is being billed as by the Vic JMV crowd, then this team should absolutely whip ass on Marshall come the 18th. No excuses.
Mike’s not taking the job because he’s desperate. He’s got similar commitments from Maggard that Billy had. I’m trusting Maggard here and have no doubt Mike’s getting what he needs to be successful.
