BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's black state lawmakers say
they are "appalled" by Attorney General Buddy Caldwell's decision
to join the lawsuit against the federal government over the newly
passed health care overhaul.
The Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement Friday
calling the lawsuit frivolous and saying it wastes state money in
the middle of a budget crisis.
Caldwell was the only Democrat to join a dozen other attorneys
general this week in the lawsuit filed in Florida, which claims the
federal legislation is unconstitutional.
Caldwell says Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal asked him to consider
a court challenge to the health care overhaul, and he says he
agreed with Jindal that the lawsuit had merit.
The black caucus says Caldwell wasn't elected to advance
Jindal's partisan interests.
