Freshman running back Montrell Johnson, Jr. has been named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson is one 37 candidates named on the list and the only player for the Sun Belt Conference that was recognized. Additionally, he is one of just six running backs honored.
A native of New Orleans, Johnson has been stellar this season, boasting 606 rushing yards on 102 attempts and leading the team with nine rushing touchdowns. He has scored more than two touchdowns in three games this year and owns two 100-yard rushing performances.
The freshman is one of three Louisiana rookies since 2000 to score at least nine touchdowns in their first season on the team, joining Trey Ragas (9) and Tyrell Fenroy (12).
He also became one of just 13 players in NCAA to record a 99-yard touchdown rush, a mark that also set both the program and Sun Belt record.
