A 13 year old is arrested after bringing a gun to school. It happened around 9am on Wednesday at B.E. Boudreaux Middle School in Baldwin. The 7th grader says he brought the gun to school to try and sell it. The gun was found, unloaded, inside the teen's locker.
No one was hurt, officials say, thanks in part to swift thinking by the school's faculty and staff. "The school acted very well, very swiftly... The early intervention and the awareness of the school staff who acted upon the information they received," Major Mark Hebert with the St. Mary Sheriff's department says.
St. Mary Superintendent, Donald Aguillard, says the "Crisis Response Plan" was immediately put into action, putting the school on lockdown and assigning students to specific teachers to ensure their safety. Aguillard says, "St. Mary officials (police, sheriff and fire departments) do a wonderful job of working with us (the schools) to make sure the building and students are safe, everyday."
The student who brought the gun was arrested and charged with bringing a firearm on campus and was released to his parents. The investigation is ongoing, as officials try to determine where the teen got the weapon. He'll be suspended until the investigation is complete.
