Something that doesnt require a dissertation education to explain to visitors what it is or how it ties in to Louisiana.
Something with a long snout that magnifies the movement and engagement of the person under the costume. The Cajun Chicken's beak accomplished this, Cayenne could not. Cayenne could turn around 360 and you wouldn't notice movement.
Something that could tie in to the main campus.
Something that has been on more USL, UL, Louisiana magazine covers and inserts than any other animal by a long shot.
Something that could be easily turned into a branding caricature ..
Zydeco
'Zydeco is just my nickname,
my real name is Louisi
Oh, and I'm just, showing my teeth for the camera.
Did I introduce you to Ana?'
Yep. I’m still in the gator-camp. Too bad if another school also has it, we have a legitimate claim to it, so I say go for it.
We need two humans in a gator costume at the games. One called ‘Louie’ and the other called ‘Anna.’ We could also do live cams on the big screen during the game showing the real gators in cypress lake.
Something like this, but dressed in UL gear, of course…with their names across their chests:
I am down with a gator but I honestly think if you did it you have the costume be a white albino alligator deck out in red and a red one deck out in white to seperate it from the Florida Gator. Call it Letiche !!
Based on history and Louisiana folklore

Within the subsection of American folklore that is Cajun folklore, there is a whole encyclopedia’s worth of legends and tales to absorb. One of the strangest, and least well-defined, of these stories is that of the Letiche.
Depending on your source, the entity is either a spirit or a child-turned-beast, but in either case, the common thread is the relative youth of the creature.
From the published novel, “Louisiana: A Guide to the State,” the story unfolds that a Letiche is actually the soul of an unbaptized infant, which swims the bayous of Terrebonne Parish and has taken to the habit of overturning boats of unsuspecting passersby.
That’s a lovely little mannerism, right?
According to another legend that has roots in Native American culture, the Letiche is actually a human child that was taken in and raised by alligators. This (of course) had the effect of creating a monster: a half-human, half-gator which craved flesh as its sustenance.
Maybe the mischievous spirit that tips over boats doesn’t sound so bad right now…
You can read more about the gator version of the Letiche in “Bayou Underground: Tracing the Mythical Roots of American Popular Music.”
But whether you subscribe to the stories of baptisms gone awry or abandoned gator babies, one thing is for sure: The Cajuns don’t much recommend you encounter a Letiche on your next visit to the Bayou.
New Orleans graveyard voodoo folklore really doesn't represent Cajun Culture.
Love the red gator idea. Another idea would be to represent our history and have a caricature of an actual Acadian riding out on a horse. We have an entire Acadian village with actual historians in period clothing. Utilize that stuff and show people who we are.
If we went the gator route, how cool would it be to have him ride out onto the field on an airboat specially designed with wheels? I've got quite an imagination for the theatrics that we could bring to our games.
I like the airboat idea!! As far as the name I think it needs to be something that we can connect to something that is based on some type of folklore or has a story. First it would make it original and not something that is cool. Second it is based on folklore and legend and a Louisiana story behind it.
I really like the Acadian idea. Something historical that represents the history and won’t get the cancel culture fired up.
I say let’s do all three!!! 2 Gators and a Acadian!! It doesn’t have to be a actual mascot!! Just dress a man up in some old timey colonial outfit and a ole timey gun! Have all three on a airboat coming out for games, and the guy who is The Acadian is we can get him cooking during tailgates!
Just name him The Acadian!!
In story telling... If we are going back in time ...
Steer clear of afterlife fears that were heavily influenced by native Indian legends, and Haitian New Orleans voodoo fears (that Southeast Louisiana adopted) and stick to the real Cajun culture that came down from Nova scotia.
jmo
Outfit like this! Who is the seasoned person on this board that can play this character I know y’all out there.
A gator mascot makes perfect sense with Cypress Lake on campus. It would help tie in the athletic and academic campus. I especially like the name Louie and Ana! What about allowing the fans, alumni, and students voting on it? This would create buy in and support for the mascot. The problem with Cayenne is that it was decided for us by an out of state marketing firm. Let the cULture decide!
