Great story. I remember seeing the great Roy Henry to David Oliver combo. USL football was fun back then just getting into Cajun Field.

Rick, I work with a former teammate of yours. He shared some more Henry stories. Thanks for sharing.
Roy Henry was going through his first spring practice here. I was waking back to the locker after practice with Roy. One of his former St. Aug teammates was talking about how Roy could throw. There was a helmet on the field about 30-35 yards away. Roy took a football and threw a rope that hit the helmet.
I also remember David Oliver never really caught the ball with his hands, he usually let the ball come into his body. He and some of the other receivers had welps and bruises on their arms and stomachs from catching passes from Roy Henry.
…… So, I get Lation, Mosby, Williams, Abadie…Brown gone to Ok… assignment get Roy… many trips to Piety St in the ninth ward…. He had a ton of offers but I didn’t know about the greatness of ND… I was riding in the car with him, and he finally says he is going to ND… I was crushed and told him he was nuts to take ND over USL… later at a sales meeting I learned what “intelligent ignorance” was…… a lot more goes into the story if you have a week, but finally mission accomplished…… when the movie Rudy came out my wife and I just stood after and laughed thinking what Roy must have thought of my recruiting efforts… yea Intelligent ignorance (keep selling what ya got)
I timed the start for 3:30 in the Spirit of 76 video. Football play begins a couple seconds later.
Great read. Henry's talent would play in any era, for sure. I am not saying Mitchell, Delhomme, Broadway wouldn't, but for my money and opinion Henry was the best.
Went to the Fresno game in that video. I was 9 years old then and can remember that game like it was yesterday. Great time.
We made a defensive stop, and the scoreboard began cycling between these two lines:
HELLO FRESNO
HELL-NO FRESNO
My young brain thought that was the funniest thing ever.
Thanks for sharing your recollections Rick.
I saw all of your holds for Rafael's kicks that year!
Roy was fun to watch.
Didn't realize we cracked 30,000 that year.
I thought the largest crowd was 29,000.
Thanks for the video Turbine.
A scared fan ain't no fan!
The problem with attendance at UL games is we have too many scared fans!
ESPN kills attendance. Too easy to access for the casual fan. The SBC should follow the NFL model and blackout games within a 30 mile radius if the team has not sold over 60% of the tickets the week of the game.
For anyone that might be interested. Roy is scheduled to be on the radio around 11:20a on the show tomorrow. 103.3 FM/1420 AM
Thank’s Rick for helping me have some sweet memories of yours to bring up! Smiles
