HAUGHTON, La. (AP) - One person was killed and three injured Tuesday when a driver ran a stop sign and hit a school bus broadside, overturning the bus into the path of an SUV, state police said.
It was Louisiana's second fatal school bus wreck in two days. Monday afternoon, a Washington Parish bus carrying elementary school students hit two parked vehicles outside Franklinton High
School, killing the bus driver and injuring a passenger, police said.
All names were withheld pending notification of families. The driver who hit the Bossier Parish bus died in the wreck on Tuesday and the SUV's driver and a 12-year-old boy with her were
seriously injured, Lt. Joseph Mondello said. He said the bus driver, whose seat belt was on, suffered only minor injuries. He said no students were on that bus. "They had just dropped off a child," he said. He says the bus was going south on Louisiana Highway 157 and the SUV - heading north - hit the back of the bus while it was toppling. That caused the undercarriage to come off, and it fell on top of the SUV, he said.
Franklinton police said the Washington Parish school bus driver
and a passenger were both thrown out of the bus. The passenger,
whose age was not given, was treated for moderate injuries.
The bus was carrying students from Franklinton Primary School, which teaches preschool through second grade, and Franklinton Elementary, which has grades 3 through 5.
