Thread: S-CLUB Hall of Fame (History of its Founding)

  1. Hall of Fame S-CLUB Hall of Fame (History of its Founding)

Foundation history of Louisiana's S-CLUB Hall of Fame

During 1939 The University of Louisiana (then SLI) instituted the *Sports Club Hall of Fame. it was then President Frazar who began the organizational move. The purpose of the Hall of Fame was to "honor these men, past, present, and future, who by their deeds as players and leaders, and by their example of their lives, personify the great contributions of athletics to our way of life. Their names shall be enshrined forever in the Hall of Fame.

    Membership required the following

    1. Athletic achievement must be solely the result of intercollegiate participation. This intercollegiate achievement must be characterized by outstanding performances and recognition for approximately two years.

    2. Scholarship and campus leadership must be of the highest order.

    3. To be eligible, athletes must have been graduated at least five years.

    4. A history of the athlete's accomplishments must be submitted to the Faculty Athletic Committee. Upon the committee's recommendation and the approval of the President of Southwestern Louisiana institute (now UL), the athlete's name and photograph shall be placed in the Hall of Fame.

    5. Only one name shall be approved in a year.

After looking at the S-Club Hall of Fame original 1939 by-laws and then adding up the total of 98 members, one question jumps out at me.

When was the one member per year limitation ditched?

Why hasn't the name been changed to the 'L' Club?

By now I am sure you are aware that it has been changed to the L-Club.

Sometime shortly after the 2004 HOF inductees were announced the media was notified of the name change. It only took 5 years from the time the school became University of Louisiana to change the Sports Club name to the Letterman's Club or as it is called the L-Club.

The S-Club was the club an athlete automatically entered if he or she lettered in a school sponsored sport at UL.

The L-Club Hall of Fame Class of 2005 was the first to be given that designation from the outset although ALL S-Club members are now considered L-Club members.

Here is my question; shouldn't the "L" stand for Louisiana and not just the generic "Letterman" ? To me that is not much of an improvement over the time tested and historically matching term Sports Club.

If it were up to me It would have remained the S-Club the University of Louisiana S-Club. The UL Sport-Club and of course the really good plaers would be in the UL S-Club Hall of Fame.

    I kind of like it.

    Center Stage.
Curious: when was the hall of fame started and where can the original criteria be located? And don't inductees have to have graduated? I think Bo Lamar and a few others came back for that very reason and then they were voted in. As for Guidry, what were his credentials while a Bulldog...without everything else that followed? Was too young to remember.

The "graduated" rule was changed this year hence the Guidry induction. I can see Kim Perrot following shortly.

I think LSU's letterman's club is also known as the "L Club."

For LSU I don't know if L stands for "Letterman" or "Louisiana."

There are some old pictures of SLI against LSU, and they had an L on their jersey's (maybe track).

Their might be a lot of "L Clubs" if the "L" stands for "Letterman."
