Listen, I spent a number of years covering the football program and baseball program. I can't tell you how many times players told me they were leaving, and weren't happy. I have no doubt that MATT, or others have talked to players. The question for me is, some of these same people were saying Degg's was the right man at the right time, now after one full season he's not the guy? I think it's an emotional knee jerk reaction at this point, based upon some of the players complaints. I'm willing to give the man 3 years to get us in a regional, if at that point things have not changed, well our AD will have a decision to make and I'm certain someone is going to say they were right all along about Deggs. Until we reach that time frame, I'm willing to give the man a reasonable chance to turn this program around.
Makes me wonder how much of Sam Houston success was on Deggs or what David Pierce left in the cupboard. Fans hated Deggs at the end at SMHS and were happy to ship him out. That's what scares me the most like if someone would hire Marlin away from us. 90% of the fan base would be celebrating in the streets like SMHS.
This seems to be revisionist history. People were upset at the beginning because he didn’t come in and win with what Pierce left the way they thought he should. But then the last 3 years they did win. I’m not informed enough to know what people thought of him at Sam at the end, but I’m relatively close and never heard anything like that. Not saying it isn’t true, just saying they won and it wasn’t wildly known that “people” didn’t like him. From the people I knew it was the opposite. They probably wouldn’t have hired his assistant to be the head coach if they were so disliked. Just a thought.
This, I think it was a few fans on message boards that felt like they were left for someone they thought they were on par with and it was easier to say they hated him. He won 2 regular season titles, 2 conference tourney titles and a regional championship in 4 years in the SLC...I’d love to hate that guy doing that here. His best team was year 3 which should have been mostly his guys.
I can certainly see how people would think that, the book deal is a little weird to me as well. If there is mutiny in the clubhouse I think maggard would know about it and deal with it. I’m not sure we are there yet because guys I thought for sure were leaving are staying (as of now) and only 2 guys leaving on the list surprised me at all.
Message boards really do not always represent the true sentiments of the fan base. Look here, only about 40 people post and only about 15 regularly. 5 or 6 bully #knowitalls can control the whole sentiments of an entire message board. I surely hope the fan base is much larger than what that represents and that what these post here does not Truely represent the fan base at times.
Here is what im hoping for in year 2…JT is allowed to stay on the road and recruit, like Robes last year as head coach. Covid presented a different senecio with the staff in which they could not recruit like normal years. I hope Wells and Deggs take the hitters and BJ stays with the pitchers. That is what i would hope for….dunno if that will happen. I can see why kids left the program this year. There is no doubt in my mind this team lost confidence in this staff at some point this year. We were grasping at straws trying to make things click in this offense all year long. Its a different style of coaching from what we were use to. But if we dont get it together next year, we will get left behind in out own league. No reason we shouldnt of breezed thru the conference this year. We had enough talent to do that. Let Jake Wells handle the hitters!
People thought he was the right guy at the right time, and are now singing a different tune; sure. But have you ever see a really well respected, well liked guy fall from grace because word gets out about what he’s actually like in private, when the cameras aren’t on? Same thing.
(This part isn’t directed at you or anyone specifically.) If y’all think there are a lot of names in the transfer portal now, just wait. Some of the big guns, the workhorses, the big names are going to be public soon. The players do not like him. They aren’t soft, or uncoachable, or whatever else people want to say. Deggs isn’t the leader of men; leaders earn respect. He’s a no explanation guy, a do as I say and don’t question me guy, a prison guard on a power trip type guy when everyone locked up is in for only a week for a petty misdemeanor. These players aren’t kids; they are men who shouldn’t be expected to follow blindly like Deggs is god and you aren’t allowed to question anything. Most players want to play their hearts out for their teammates and their coach. But these guys have spent the year with him and half the team is saying, “I’d rather take my chances, leave behind my girlfriend, and start over with a whole new coach, a whole new team, a whole new city and university.” They aren’t transferring bc of hurt feelings, or being soft, or a bad day. They’re transferring because, even though the right words may be said in front of donors and microphones, Deggs doesn’t have any of the attributes of a respectable coach, and it shows by the way that the guys who have spent thousands of hours with him over the last year, are jumping ship as fast as they can.
