Thread: Texas UIL State Softball Championships

  1. UL Softball Texas UIL State Softball Championships

For anyone that wants to track Barbers Hill and Cajun recruit Samantha Landry on their way to a possible 5A state championship, you can track stats here ... and NFHS Network is streaming the 5A state title game today at 2pm (Barbers Hill vs. Aledo) ... was showing as 4pm earlier. You can also see the replay of yesterday's semi-final game vs. Hallsville, in which Landry pitched (6-0 win for Barbers Hill).

Given the semi-final yesterday was less than an hour from my home, I took the opportunity to check out the game. I missed the top of the first inning, when Landry yielded her only hit. But Hallsville was certainly over-matched and Landry dominated in a 6-0, one hit shutout. She struck out 12 and walked 4. Hallsville could not catch up with her velocity. I was in CF, so it was hard to tell ... but I would guess 66-68. Threw some rise-balls, but seemed to go with the sinking hard stuff and also an occasional change. Not many balls left the infield, when the bat was on the ball. Landry was 0-3 at the plate, but she did hit a hard ball to RF that was caught on the run in RF foul territory. While Landry is listed at 5'10", I could have sworn she was 6' ... but hard to tell from about 150'. BH faced a pitcher that is a UT-Tyler commit. The Eagles also had a HR to LCF that cleared the fence by a good 20' (right beside me).

I would imagine that Sophia Simpson (Texas commit) will be throwing today for Barbers Hills vs. Aledo for the state title, with Landry backing her up if necessary. I saw her in a brief bullpen session during the game, when I was standing near the BH dugout. The bullpen was in a configuration behind the dugout with a 6' surrounding fence. She bounced a change-up to start ... then threw a rise ball that cleared the fence by at least four feet, hitting the spectator stands. She then sheepishly walked off muttering "that's enough". She came back later to get some work in and looked good.

I have talked to people in Texas who are very familiar with the team. They know Landry is going to Louisiana and Simpson is going to Texas.

They told me, out of the two, Landry is the much better pitcher and is more prepared for the college level. The knock against Simpson is she has a hard time under pressure. Well, there won't be more pressure than pitching for the state championship. Let's see what happens.

Thanks for the update. We were supposed to have made the trip but something came up. I will follow the stats.

Got you. I didn't think you meant to home plate. You know everything is bigger in texas.
