What if JMU has a great year again and then a down year when you want to play them? The one year wait is to determine if she can win with her recruits, not Mickey's. If she can win one year, she can win the next. Either way, I'm willing to risk it. There are other teams on the east coast the Cajuns can play if they really want.
It is always a risk/reward when scheduling. I doubt JMU just falls off the face of the softball world. I felt the same way about Fresno State, Tulsa, South Florida, Massachusetts, Hofstra and Houston, and yet, here we are. Louisiana is the ONLY non-power conference program over the last 30 years that has stayed relevant on the national level consistently. What other program over even the last 12 years can you say has beaten ACC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12 and SEC teams during the regular or post season like the Cajuns have? I'm only asking one year for James Madison. That shouldn't be too much to ask.
Coach Glasco has teamed up with Brian to build a schedule with teams who have been relevant, not teams who might not be relevant. I sure hope so.
When you schedule out teams you do it based on previous history. I know that. I've been doing such for over 20 years.
In baseball and softball we have scheduled teams that we figured would be strong rpi games only to see the teams we scheduled have a bad year. I've seen that and I attribute it to the coaches in charge of the scheduling not doing enough of their homework to schedule properly. It's a little tougher to do with baseball, but it can still be done. The softball schedule started getting better when Mike let Brian help him.
Smart scheduling would entail playing teams close in the area and catching JMU on the back end. Kind of like how we did with Campbell a few years ago. The same can be done when JMU is in the south they can piggy back some games with us. That type of scheduling is normal practice and there's nothing wrong with it.
Most big schools are scared to play the Cajuns That's not entirely true. The upper power conference teams we have played (Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Alabama, LSU, etc.) already play quality G5 teams because they know that, win or lose, the rest of their schedule will protect them from any adverse affects. The Kentuckys, Mississippis, Auburns, etc. know that they will be in competition with the Cajuns for a regional hosting position and do not want to help the Cajuns in any way to gain an advantage over them in the eyes of the committee.
and Coach Glasco has proven time and time again the Cajuns will go and meet any team. This is entirely true.
