Before the portal listed their names, how many kids were willing to transfer each year? Give me the number
You aren’t a coach, many different reasons why a kid might seek a transfer, a lot of coaches try to help kids land somewhere.
Both help facilitate a transfer but they are two different things. If the portal was put in place without the immediate eligibility rule, there would be far less transfers.
If just the immediate eligibility rule was put in place without the portal, it would make things more difficult, however, there would still be far more transfers.
Of course they are two separate things, but they work together in meeting compliance. So the two are interlinked as part of the process. You can not transfer without entering the transfer portal to begin the process. As a coach, you can not contact a athlete at another program legally until they are registered in the portal.
There is nothing to be argumentative about it, one is required to do the other.
Unless the player is a special one, most coaches already follow this rule. Players are already being tampered with before entering the portal. Will be interesting how many players are left out with no scholarship after entering the portal. Is like quitting a job before having the next one lined up.
The top players have always been coveted, always will be..legally, illegally doesn’t matter..the best players will always be wanted. What the portal does do is give those kids a chance that have been busting their ass for 2-3 years but just can’t get in the field an opportunity to go somewhere with a chance to play. Everyone keeps talking about their best players being lured away by bigger programs.,.well guess what, that’s always happened. Like Vic said, the no sit rule has way more to do with increase transfers than the portal. The portal is just a database, not having to waste of year of eligibility is the issue.
Of course it has happened before, illegally behind the scenes. The Transfer Portal now allows contact legally once an athlete enters it. Will the problem of illegal contacting and recruiting continue behind the scenes? Yes it will, but the process of the transfer portal allows the athlete to enter their name for other programs to contact them without the current staff restricting them from transferring to a rival or conference foe. That is the difference now, coaches can no longer refuse to release an athlete to transfer.
