I know everyone is scared of Tutthill, and yes he has good stuff, but this guy tends to walk people and throw a lot of pitches. Even with an average day at the plate, we can chase him by the 6th and App St has ____ for a bullpen after the guys they threw to beat Tx St. This ballpark plays big. High chops on the infield and huge power alleys. All of those things are an advantage to the Cajuns.
We are better offensively, we are better on the mound (Cooke and the arms we have available) and with CJ at first, TR at 3rd and HOPEFULLY Borgy at 2nd, we are as good defensively. No reason we should lose this game tonight.
What kind of stuff does Tutthill have? Is he a soft throwing lefty? If so we’re screwed
Everything he throws has movement. Lots of junk.
However, if we can be disciplined, he’ll walk hitters and pitch himself out of the game by the 5th-6th inning. I’m particularly worried about Ben, CJ, TR and Kimple. Free swingers that are not exactly seeing the ball well lately. MUST swing at strikes tonight.
Exactly, this is a team that does not have 1 hitter batting over .300 and they hit only .239 as a team. Their team ERA is 6.54 and I know that Tuthill is good, but as stated before they used their best bullpen guy for 3 innings on Tuesday, Eli Ellington through 37 pitches vs Texas State. He is a guy with 3.52 ERA, they only have 1 other guy outside of Tuthill with under a 5 ERA. We need to get to their pen at some point. If we do that we will win the game.
I like the thought of starting Cooke tonight Since Cooke became a starter he has not had an outing where he threw less than 5 innings and has not been less than 6 innings since 4/10. If we can get 6-9 innings from Cooke tonight (preferably 7 or 8), then we will be set up nicely for the Semifinals and Finals. Arighetti on Saturday and Carter Robinson on Sunday with a pretty full bullpen available. Remember we only through 3 guys who could possibly be in our bullpen rotation last night, Burk, Perrin and Durke. Burk threw 31, Perrin threw 17 and Durke threw 18 pitches respectively. They are all available for the weekend. Coach did a great job of getting Havard, Riola, Moriarty, Christie and Bradford in the game to finish it. Only Burk threw over 30 pitches, Moriarty, Christie and Bradford threw 26, 24 and 21.
I am not saying we are going to win the tournament, but we are set up nicely with our pitching.
One Hellacious big league curve ball, for one thing. He was picked for the Cape last year, but the season was cancelled. Instead, he trained in Florida. FB looks upper 80's - low 90's.
His last game was a week ago against S. AL. 6.0 IP, 3 H, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HBP, 0 R, 84 Pitches.
He threw 1 CG this year, May 14 in Little Rock, 125 pitches. 1 ER, 4 H, 11 K, 1 BB. He has allowed 2 runs or less in 7 of his last 9 starts.
I expect him to go deep in the game. App is last in the Sunbelt in Team BA, but they make few errors. We need to play defense and not squander baserunners to do well. I expect Cooke to keep pace with Tuthill. We hit better and if we play well, we should win. A break or two would be nice.

This actually has me scared right now. Tuthill pitching: https://m.facebook.com/watch/?v=1085264695332770&_rdr
The one particular thing that has concerned me in the past few weeks is how we chase the breaking ball. Ben has made some golf swings lately that seems uncharacteristic of him. The good news is that I noticed Kimple, Drake, Brennan, and Bobby made some solid swings last night that can make a difference if it continues tonight.
If we can score 3 or so runs on Tuthill, Cooke will do the rest on the mound.
Count me in the camp that wouldn’t start Cooke tonight. I don’t think we burn him right now.
I’m not killing Deggs for the decision or anything. I get the thinking. But for me, Spencer is now on a week full rest. I’d roll with him tonight.
I want Cooke for Saturday or Sunday.
To be honest with you, going with Spencer tonight wouldn't have been a bad idea. What's crazy is that Spencer has a sub-ERA of around 5.00 in his past 5 outings to where I personally would've rather Cooke go against Georgia Southern.
We shall see how it all pans out.
Ready for a Cajuns win tonight! Keep winning until we hit Omaha!
I would assume his thought is that if he plays Cooke tonight he might have available on Sunday (if needed) for an inning or two. You won't be around Saturday and Sunday if you don't win tonight.
Sunday might be an all hands on deck day. If any of our pitchers can bounce back, and have the ability to throw as a bullpen guy, it is Cooke. His thought, probably, as I have not knowledge of this, is that Robinson and Arighetti, unless they get rocked early are done once he starts them. Cooke, because of his past as a bullpen guy and his athleticism, might be the only guy that could come back and compete on Sunday.
Regardless of who is on the bump we need to score early and cant give up 3 or 4 in the first few innings. To me that means we pitch Cooke.
I know you have to win them all but there's no room for error. You do what you have to do to win the first and I think Cooke is the guy to do it. I don't think there's a wrong answer though. I'd trust either guy to get it done. I also do not have the info to judge how each guy matches up with App's bats, which is a large portion of the formula.
Arrighetti just has not been the same dominant guy as he was in the first half of the season. Last 5 starts, ERA is 6.33 (granted a lot is skewed on a 9 ER game vs TXST-if you exclude its closer to 3.33.) Just 2 of 5 were Quality Starts (6+ IP, < 3ER.) Every start he made before that was a QS. I think I'd rather give him an extra day if anything
Cooke in his last 5, ERA is 2.02, he's given up 4 hits or fewer in all of those and all 5 were Quality Starts. He hasn't shown an effect on 1 day fewer when he's had to do it so far.
