Isn't that, in fact, how many coaches get experience by being hired as an assistant? Even if its support staff? We have people on staff that weren't coaches before. There are many programs that hire ex players to be assistants right off the bat. UNC just hired a guy who has never been a head coach. Ever. And they could have hired close to anybody they would have gone after.
I think you make a good point. I believe it's handled on a case by case basis. For instance, Coach Morris was not hired as an assistant when he was director of basketball ops because he didn't have coaching experience. He went out and got experience both as an assistant and as a head coach. He will be a D1 head coach one day.

Coach Crow had been on staff previously but he did not have recruiting experience. But Marlin had him from the time he was a student-athlete and knew what he had in him.

I have no beef with Brad. I was just simply stating why I do not believe he is a candidate.

I am not "going after" anyone's wife and kids. I simply stated things that would preclude Bob Marlin from considering Brad.

Brad is a good basketball coach. If he has a desire to coach college basketball he will get an opportunity sometime, somewhere.

    How about Byron Starks?

Byron, if you recall, was on Robert Lee's staff for one year. Back then, he didn't like the travel nor was he big on recruiting. That has to have changed to an extent.

Byron is one of the finest student-athletes I've ever covered. A really good man.

He seems to be doing well at LSUE. Another fine candidate to be an assistant if timing is right.

    Robert Lee
    Eric Mouton
    Jason Kennermer
    Josh Crow
    Byron Starks

    Just to name a few!

They've cashed out due to lack of momentum within the program. If some interesting scenario came along, you'd see people wake up. I'm prime example of that. I haven't had season tickets for the past 4 years but I'd sure ramp up my donations and ticket purchases if there was some exciting movement in the program.

The thing about Brad that I'm most interested in is his passion for the program. That can take you a LONG way. It's much easier for players to buy into what you are selling when you can tell the salesman truly believes in what he's doing. You don't just walk in the door as a great X and O coach. You learn from mistakes and from experience. You can improve at recruiting and in most aspects of coaching but you can't just turn on and off the passion switch and Brad has it. I know he doesn't have HC experience but our program is at a point where I'd be more than happy with giving him or someone a chance who can inject some life back into it.

If you can't afford a 100k buyout you have no business being D1
