The situation is that demographics show a lowering of the HS graduation rates in Louisiana---This will provide a lower pool of bodies that schools will be competing for, ergo less college students----The entrance requirements of schools are going up which further lowers the number of HS graduates that can come to UL and other higher tier schools----New funding formulae consist of number of students, retention, and graduation rates-----We need to increase and keep our students and eventually graduate them if we are to receive the max revenue we desire for keeping up and ahead of the Jonses-------Our charge is to get more kids away from other schools and enrolled at UL---I would ask your input on ANY ideas to reach this goal---I will start it off and please lend your support ---very important-----We need to win in Sports---especially football---we need better dorms with more kids on campus----we need to beautify the present campus and add more student friendly areas and activities---I think we are doing these things on many fronts---Please add any ideas because this will go to the administration Thanks!!!!!
We need to get aggressive in recruiting at individual high schools. I don't mean recruiting student-athletes, I mean plain ol' students. And we need to raise our profile outside of Acadiana.
UL is an excellent fit for kids in the Crescent City. It is the perfect distance for kids who want to get away from home, but not too far. And it has a ton to offer. But we don't hear nearly enough about UL over here. Unless you are talking to a UL student, or an alum, you never hear about UL at all.
In the early 80's UL had almost .003887 of LA's population enrolled. 16,351
Today (even after Katrina exodus) Louisiana's population has grown by about 325,000
A good long term goal for UL would be to have 1/2 of 1% (.005) of Louisiana's population enrolled in school. With today's population that would be 22,667
I know Hud recently said the enrollment was 19,000 but that is inflated to include students over a full year, and including continuing education.
If the 1980 percentages were true today, enrollment would be 17,623
Problem was, even without the constraints you mentioned above, a lack of drive let the enrollment dip to almost 15,000 twice in the years after the mid 80's.

UL has been doing a pretty cool thing by going to all the local high schools and holding "academic signing day" ceremonies for kids qualifying for TOPS and academic scholarships to UL. The Advertiser covered it when they first did it a few years ago when my oldest was a senior. Hopefully they still do this. It sends the message that academics are just as important as (should be more than) the athletics.
My son just got accepted and starts in the fall of 2014. Just like his dad.........
