more creedence to this being Lasorda rather than a robism is backed up by the #’s.
with approx 300 teams in ncaa d-1, in 2019 there were 65 teams that were either above .667 (30) or below .333 (35). to compare to mlb, taking the ten seasons from 2010-2019 (to get to 300 teams) only ThREE teams were below, and none above.

i initially thought the problem would stem from inadequacies in scheduling and disparities in some conferences being “so much better” than others in college and home and away issues that is better balanced out in mlb. but nope: if i count just conference records (also in 2019) the NCAA number jumps to 38 schools above .667 and 39 were below .333
