Jerry Flake was the key guy on the teams which started our school towards being a factor in men's college basketball for many years. Mantle went from Flake to Winkler to Lamar to Toney to Graylin Warner to Kevin Brooks to Michael Allen to Lonnie Thomas to Brad Boyd to Tryen Johnson to LaRyan Gary. Lots of other great players and teams throughout history. I am sure some will say that someone else was the key guy for a certain period I listed. Flake is the guy who started it all. We have been down the last few years but maybe Elfrid Payton and Shawn Long will keep the legacy going.

  6. UL Basketball 48 Years in the making: Flake joins Louisiana Select Few

One of only five other Ragin' Cajuns to score over 2,000 in his career, Flake took the moment in stride with his cool and calm demeanor. "Everything went great," Flake said. "It's been a great experience." Flake played for the Cajuns ...

"Thirty years since picking up a basketball, this 73-year-old has still got it. Watch Jerry Flake (who used to shoot hoops for the University of Louisiana) show off on the court for his grandson in Plant City, Florida."

Don’t the Cajuns still have a few available scholarships?

He used to ride his bicycle all over campus each day going from one class to another. Nice guy. A few months ago, I was playing blackjack at the casino with my Ragin Cajuns cap on. An elderly couple next to me asked if I had gone to UL and I told them I had. They were relatives of Jerry and we had a ball bringing back the memories.
