New tailgating rules: No grills, no tents

University of Georgia officials unveiled new rules today designed to tone down tailgating parties on the university’s north campus next football season.

The regulations set new limits on what fans can bring and do on the oldest part of the UGA campus, but stop far short of an outright ban on tailgating — an option the UGA committee that drew up the plan did discuss, said UGA President Michael Adams.

Georgia’s first home football game is Saturday, Sept. 4 against Louisiana. The first conference game is scheduled for Sept. 18 against Arkansas. Those changes apply only to North Campus. But a few more new rules will be enforced in all ...

I don't see why they didn't go ahead and just completely ban tailgating on their main (North) campus. It really isn't that much further from the rules they put in place.

Nice to have yet another reminder of how nice the tailgating situation is here in Louisiana.

It has more to do with litter.

I recall reading somewhere that in the late 1800's, during a similar meeting at Ole Miss; Fraternities were banned from campus...the rule was rescinded prior to sundown on the very same day. If this applied to the main campus where Sanford stadium is located, I would suspect this to be nothing more than a premature April Fool's joke destined to suffer a similar fate.

Have any of you guys ever tailgated at UGA? I have actually been on a stage built on top of a bus doing Karioke that had an 8' wide grill on the back and a big screen TV on the side...and there are many similarly equipped pieces of equipment; strategically deployed for use in the UGA pre and post game war effort :-)

Like a freakin' BCS school can't afford to pay to have trash picked up the next day? Or how about paying for the cardboard boxes and garbage bags like UL (with among the lowest budgets in D1A) manages to?

Their University is expressing it's disapproval for the lack of respect tailgaters are showing for the campus. If that amount of litter were on OUR campus after a game, I would fully support a ban on tailgating.

I take your comment to be on the same level as a school kid littering and making a mess in the classroom and saying "the janitor gets paid to clean up."

Maybe I took your post wrong... either way that amount of trash is a disgusting display of respect.

I agree that the trash is unsightly and you would think their fans would have more respect for their campus. However, my point was that there are other steps that could be taken that are less draconian than this. The point about hiring labor to clean up was to point out that they have the resources to do so. As I understand it State does just that each week. We have far fewer resources and yet we still manage to take steps to minimize the trash left behind from our tailgating. UGA should be able to figure out a reasonable solution.

Take LSU for example, their stadium seats 92,000 but I'd imagine well over 100,000 people show up to tailgate. Expecting your campus to be spotless after 100,000 plus people enjoy the festivities is unrealistic and shortsighted. Trash will be a problem, but remember how much money that trash just generated your program.

Moves like this do more damage than good in the end and are extremely difficult to enforce.

These rules apply to the "North Campus", this is the older historic part of the school. This is not where the stadium is located. Of course I see that they are boldly addressing tailgating on the "Main Campus" (where Sanford Stadium resides) as well, by banning all ATV's, Dirt Bike Racing, and Rocket Launchers :-)

My personal opinion is, Georgia fans rank #1 in the SEC for being "bulletproof" at their home stadium. What I mean by this is that they seem to look at each game as some sort of primal party priviledge, not unlike a bachelor party. I am not sure what it is that causes this (beyond the lofty amounts of alchohol consumed), but it almost seems as if there is some sort of subconcious competition for who can become the most out of control tailgater. I have seen UGA tailgaters urinate on opponents vehicles, not the wheels mind you, the hoods...

In other words, as groups of tailgaters go, they are pretty much at the top of the list for needing to be reigned in...and pretty dang proud of their ranking :-)

This does not mean that I think littering is an acceptable thing, but I'd love to have that kind of litter hanging around after every game. It takes a LOT of people to generate that kind of trash!
