i think seahawks made same mistake as saints, gave a qb a huge raise for winning super bowl and dont think they won another either.... (throwing money after past accomplishments doesnt seem useful to me)

The only purpose of a pay cut is to free up cap space.

There is more than one way to take a pay cut.

You can extend contracts and back load them to free up cap space.

Brees has also been in the situation of "is this his last year" for 3 years. Thus the 1-year and 2-year contracts.
