Thread: One Rare Stat That Will Only Make Saints Fans More Depressed

  1. Default One Rare Stat That Will Only Make Saints Fans More Depressed

After their playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New Orleans Saints became the first team to land on an unfortunate list.

    Mike Triplett

Not surprising to hear the Saints are an unfortunate first on this list, but shows how rare these last 4 years have been for them: First team ever to win 49 regular-season games in 4-year span without reaching the Super Bowl once, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

It's like UL winning 27 regular season games in basketball and not making the championship game.

    4 years in a row.

No doubt leaves a bitter taste. Brees was fantastic, but to have a first ballot hall of famer and only make it to one Super Bowl 11 years ago? Saints fans will never forget the 2009 season, but may have looked at you funny if you said back then that "you won't get back with Brees again and he won't retire for another decade."

I remember when the Saints playing at home was a death sentence for the other team. But in the playoffs in recent years, it's been a nightmare for the home fans.

Overall I think Brees and Payton went 9-8 in the playoffs. 1 for 1 in the Super Bowl. 1 for 3 in NFC Championships.

They have only reached the NFC championship game three times. Loss to Bears after 2006, beat Vikings after 2009, and lost to Rams on non PI call after 2018.

Imagine saying to Dolphins fans after Marino reached the Super Bowl in just his second NFL season, "You'll never make it back".

Over the next 10 seasons after that record-setting 1984 season that ended with a Super Bowl loss, Elway's Broncos would make three Super Bowls, and Kelly's Bills would make four. Marino's Dolphins, during that same 10 year span, would make the playoffs four times, and lose in the AFC Championship game two of those seasons.

    Wow.

    Whoda thunk it eras.

Add to the mix that season the NFL stole the post season from the Saints.

maybe brees should have retired before the season, thus giving them money towards the salary cap to strengthen other positions and be able to keep a previously unbeaten qb who had more years of longevity available....

brees has made more money than brady. brady seemed more willing to take a pay cut, having done so at least six times.

i think seahawks made same mistake as saints, gave a qb a huge raise for winning super bowl and dont think they won another either.... (throwing money after past accomplishments doesnt seem useful to me)
