Thread: Name Advances

    UL 1984, 1999 . . . . Name Advances

    ULL & UL-Lafayette

    1) Seeing a lot less of these used, particularly outside the state.

    2) When they do appear, people here don't seem to care as much.

    Winning cures many ills...

It's pretty much InsecureU (LSU) fans, LA Tech fans and some ULM who are the holdouts. The great vast majority of everyone else is cool using whatever the ESPN/AP/CBS's of the worlds now use, which is Louisiana. I find they'll either use Louisiana or stick to just Cajuns/Ragin Cajuns when wanting to be neutral.

    Validates your early 80's efforts.

Yours and Leslie Durio's as well.

The Advocate covers UL now and has the right references in the articles it writes. But, open up the digital newspaper under Sports and it is UL-Lafayette. Seems like that should be corrected.

We have hit critical mass, and our national success has cemented it. The Iowa State win with the subsequent national questioning of their ranking relative to us and CC burned Louisiana into the national sport’s media consciousness. We won. Soon ULL and UL-Lafayette will be as rare as a LSU athletic administrator with morals.

The less we acknowledge it bothers us the faster it goes away altogether.

Most LSU alums I know are secure and aren’t the least bothered by whatever we call our university. It’s the silk screen crowd that goes nuts about UL/Louisiana.

And don’t forget Zem and the McNeese crowd. Same fumble hurt mentality as Rustonia and the few ULM complainers left. With ULM, the importance of the last two years of the name fight was paramount. With their new staff, if we were any less, the fight may still exist.

We just need to hold the course and ignore the sniffling little beaches that remain.

Time fixes all, we still have my dad’s freshman beanie. Clearly and proudly “4 L S”. Took years to get LSU to stick. Our journey is no different.

Now we need AP and Gannet to get it right.

Why start a thread with this title? It seems kind of self defeating.

That is exactly what I thought when I saw it. Self defeating.

.....The best argument I come up with is the comparison with Nevada....formerly Nevada Reno, ain’t der no more! I think most people are getting into UL which goes with Louisiana....the audio, and visual print along with the UL hand sign....we need to increase the hand and finger “UL” sign during our alma mater......Yes I do get a lil misty eyed when I see the hands go up!

You might want to check the Nevada law vs Louisiana. I know we don’t think much about Nevada law these days, but......

Another significant way improve perception is to change the name of the Marching Band to the Pride of Louisiana. This should have happened in 1999 when UL was no longer a regional university and the name on our degrees say the University of Louisiana. It’s time to be big time in all aspects. I know our bands have a lot of pride and history. I appreciate and support them, but it’s time to be the Pride of Louisiana. If the band director doesn’t want to make the name change, let all students and alumni vote on it just like we did the uniforms. It’s their money supporting the bands.
