“I have felt like since I started TV that our system is not set up where a Group of 5 team can get in the playoffs,” Brown said, “because of the number of games scheduled, the number of power five games scheduled, their conference schedule doesn't give them the opportunity to pass the test. So if it's unfair for Cincinnati or South Florida or Coastal Carolina because they're not going to be able to get in because of the system, then let's be fair to them and change the system. I really think the Group of 5 should have their own national championship. And they should have their own playoff and I think it'd be great.”
To be fair, Mack, North Carolina isn't getting in the playoff either. In fact, about 120 of the 130 FBS schools have no real shot at getting in on a year to year basis. Do you think if you split the P5 and G5 then the likes of UNC, NC State, Purdue, Colorado, Texas Tech or any other of those mid level P5 have a better shot of getting in with the current playoff format and selection method? Highly unlikely. In fact, their records would likely take a huge hit just beating up on conference and other P5 opponents.
Make the New Year's 6 games part of the playoff and continue to give an automatic spot to the G5. It sounds easy, at least. You may even sneak 2 G5 teams in there. You would have this year with Coastal at #12.
I can fix college football. Go back to the bowl tie ins and and the "plus one" model. Two highest ranked teams play each other in the championship game following all the bowl games. Limit bowl games to 30. That way over half the teams don't qualify and the regular season means more. All 7 and 5 teams are taken ahead of the 6 and 6 teams regardless of their brand. All undefeated teams are considered first for the championship game spot. That means an undefeated G5 teams gets in the final game over all 1 loss P5 teams. If you have two undefeated P5 teams after the bowl games, the G5 best team is left out but at least the G5 teams have a shot in my proposal. I am assuming the top ranked G5 team does get a New Year's Game slot.
