Thread: Fiesta Bowl: Iowa State vs Oregon (Timeline)

  1. UL Football Fiesta Bowl: Iowa State vs Oregon (Timeline)

Sept. 12 — Iowa State opens the season with a 31-14 loss to Louisiana in Ames after giving up a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, a 78-yard passing touchdown and an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown.

"Give credit to their team," Cyclones coach Matt Campbell said. "A really veteran football team that came in here and in the second half just really dominated the game.”

The Ragin’ Cajuns finished the season 10-1 but were still 19th in the final College Football Playoff rankings, nine spots below Iowa State.

It was definitely a BIG PLAY day, and if that's all you looked at you could read fluke.

However by going 9-1 the rest of the way, with the only loss being to an undefeated regular season team on a last second field goal, it makes me wish the SunBelt had better tie-ins.

Yes, but if you take away the two special team touchdowns, Cajuns still win the game. No one ever mentions this. And of course, they are not given credit for this win.

Also, if you take away the two special team touchdowns, you must add two more offensive possessions for the Cajuns.

Even if we don't score on those two possessions we still win by 3 and we eat up clock.

We also missed 2 chip shot field goals. The game played out like it was supposed to and the better team won

Absolutely, but why exactly am I supposed to remove two giant special team plays? They’re more rare than a 40 yard completion that are also rare, but we still throw deep. Nobody calls those back when they work.

You are not, however in response to those who say we won because of the two special team TD’s, I say then you must give back two possessions if you take those away.

Coaches everywhere always talk about the three phases of the game; Offense, Defense and Special Teams. Why should the Cajuns not be given credit for better play on Special Teams, since that is a big part of every game?

Oh, they should. These discussions are mainly in response to the negative nellies. You know, those that posit, if not for the two special teams TD’s, then . . .

Then, we would have beaten them by 3? Last I checked, that's still a win. AT Iowa State.

Negative nellies are never right, they are just negative.
