BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - An Iberia Parish state senator has left
the Democratic Party and become the Senate's only member
independent of a political party.
Sen. Troy Hebert of Jeanerette says he changed to no party
affiliation because he wants the freedom to support both Democratic
and Republican ideas. He says he thinks the change shows his
willingness to work with lawmakers on both sides of the political
aisle.
Hebert is in his first term as a state senator. Before that, he
was a member of the state House of Representatives for 12 years.
He's known for his colorful anecdotes, stories of rural Acadiana
and often fiery speeches in defense of the "little man."
Hebert joins three House members who are registered with no
party affiliation.
