ULM operates at an FCS level and cannot continue to effectively compete in the FBS. ULM has by far the lowest budget in FBS and lower than many FCS schools. $350k head coach salary is ridiculously low for an FBS school. If Viator couldn't win there, I doubt anyone can be successful playing at the higher level. Time to return to their glory years winning a national championship in 1aa as NLU. They would have a better identity as NLU, North Louisiana University, that many alumni would like to see. The ULM name no longer impacts us, but I think returning to NLU would be beneficial to them.

Well, the name question is interesting, because 1) I am not sure if they would be allowed to change it, and 2) assuming they would, and did, that would probablly have an impact on us, as the 'law' created when we both changed in the late 90's was that there had to be at least 2 schools in the system that agreed to the change their names. If we couldn't get another school to change theirs (which I highly doubt we could), would they then try to make us change back to USL? I would think that would most likely happen, lol.
No, I think it best all around if ULM stays ULM.

Maybe not, but some of the West Monroe Moms definitely are.

I believe the answer to your question is No. If ULM changed their name, that would NOT have any effect on us. The 2 schools requirement was only for the initial name change. As far as I can tell, the law says nothing about this current situation.

Turbine can tell you a name story about what a law said nothing about. We’re still in Louisiana and it’s dangerous anytime they take you to court.

ULM’s lack commit to athletics is both an embarrassment and liability to the Sunbelt Conference. The Sunbelt Conference should institute a minimum athletics budget requirement. If ULM doesn’t meet it, the University Presidents should kick them out of the conference.

The conference doesn’t share your animosity with ULM!

Man I read this stuff and I remember when outsiders said the same thing about us that we say about ULM. Everyone and their brother said we should drop down to (what at the time was) 1-AA. The only ones who didn't were our own fans.

ULM will do what is best for ULM. They're being stubborn about staying in FBS. But we were pretty damn stubborn too.

Someone posted on the other board that their President will take a look this summer at a move to the FCS. I wonder if the departure of some Texas schools out of the SLC will be a factor as they review their options.

Well, the SLC would be very bus friendly for ULM. UCA, McNeese, the two NSU’s, and SLU...that’s 5 for football. UNO makes 6 for other sports.

The other part of dropping down is ego. Giving into the name fight to now a few decades later to return to where you couldn't wait to get away from would once again anger fans. And having lost the name fight AND athletically drop to a lower division in football is another thing that would anger alumni. It's admitting you're not on par with UL.

    They're screwed either way.

FWIW, I’m watching a team ULM might compete with. Arizona. They’re bad.

Interesting match up there. We got Billy from ASU as they opted for the NFL coach, Zona who you mention has a coach wanted by some. Even starting airplane rumors. Looks like we sure did the best of the 3 universities involved. It’s not even close.
