Thread: Former football assistants to become Head Coaches?

  1. #1

UL Football Former football assistants to become Head Coaches?

With the projected announcement of Will Hall to become the Head Coach at Southern Miss, this got me thinking about what other former football assistants have become the main man?

    I know of a few:
    Blake Anderson —> Arkansas State
    Tim Rebowe —> Nicholls State
    Brian Jenkins —> Bethune Cookman
    Terry Sims —> Bethune Cookman
    Will Hall —> Southern Miss

Still hoping for the Head Coach to move on to become a Head Coach at a bigger school. This is the only one I believe:
    Mark Hudspeth —> Austin Peay

    Interesting topic.

I'm drawing a blank this early in the morning.

Some NFL hires but as assistants

Austin Peay isn't bigger than UL.

Not counting this, just asking, was Ragin' Cajun Joe DeForest ever a grad assistant here?

So far he has been an associate HC.

Correct, it's about the size of Tech.

However, if notoriety is what makes you bigger, Hud doubled the 'bigness' of Austin Peay.

Carey Bailey was the head coach at Howard. He was an assistant under Coach Stokely, Coach Baldwin, and Coach Bustle. He is currently an assistant in the Canadian league.

I stated that I’m still HOPING for the head coach to move on to a bigger school. Maybe I should have phrased it as “a head coach” but regardless I never said Austin Peay was bigger. Only that Hud is the only former head coach to get another head coaching position at a college.

I think anyone that follows this board knows that Austin Peay is smaller. I couldn’t even tell you what state it was located in before Hud went there.

Didn't Bustle move on to an asst position somewhere?

Trivia: Gerald Broussard took Shawn Quinn's place.

Quinn was also the assistant who in 2005 called an inadvertent timeout, which cost UL a win, an outright conference championship, and a bowl appearance.

Yes, Bustle was an assistant at Tulane and USM and then at NC A&T in Greensboro. The problem at both Tulane as the QB coach and USM as the RB coach, was that he was on the staffs of Lame Duck Coaches. He was with Bob Toledo who was fired at the end of that season after going 2-11 and then he was with Ellis Johnson at USM who ended up going 0-12. He moved on to NC A&T as the OC where he was having really good success, but I think he was having some health issues and decided not to coach after that if I am not mistaken.
