Thread: Ty Harper

  1. UL Basketball Four-Star Recruit Ty Harper Signs With Louisiana

Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball coach Bob Marlin added to an already solid 2020-21 recruiting class on Tuesday when he announced the addition of four-star recruit Ty Harper signed a National Letter of Intent during the Early Signing Period.

Harper, a 6-foot-4 combo guard, was rated as the No. 6 overall recruit in the state of California and the No. 100-rated overall recruit nationally by ESPN. The native of Norcross, Ga., who was the No. 22-rated shooting guard in the country, joined Carencro's Joe Charles as signees for the 2020-21 season.

"We are excited about the addition of Ty Harper to the Ragin' Cajuns Basketball family," Marlin said. "His ability to affect winning in multiple ways will help our team. He is a humble guy who works extremely hard and has an intense passion for improvement. His speed and athleticism allow him to get downhill quickly and put pressure on the defense."

Harper, who averaged 15.5 points per game as a senior, helped Santa Clarita (Calif.) Christian to a 24-6 record, the 2020 CIF-Southern Sectional Division 2AA title and a No. 28 national ranking by Max Preps. Harper was named the Division 2AA Player of the Year and was a first-team All-Southern California and All-Area selection.

"Ty has done a tremendous job becoming a player who can score at all three levels," Marlin added. "His shot is a weapon that doesn't allow defenders to back off. We believe Ty will fit our style of play perfectly."

Looking for video of Harper I found this one pretty interesting. From early last season when his Santa Clarita Christian squad was matched up against Sierra Canyon, the #2 ranked team in the country. Sierra Canyon may be best known for Bronny James and Zaire Wade (yes sons of LeBron and Dwayne) but their roster is full of nationally ranked players. Other notables are class of 2020 national #5 Ziaire Williams (now at Stanford), and #6 BJ Boston (now at Kentucky) and Class of 2022 national #3 Amari Bailey. In the video Harper (#10 in the white uniforms) clearly holds his own and in fact he led all scorers with 28 points in the game. Santa Clarita is outmatched down the stretch and Harper has a few turnovers against the press but overall a pretty impressive performance on a very big stage for a high school game.

#10 on white team seems to have a nice shot.

On defense looks like he is just waiting to get the ball back. Work to do on the the defensive one for sure.

Good looking player. No doubt has the size and speed to help.

Beyond having a nice shot, he also showed ability to get to the rim in that video. Despite being left handed, he showed a nice right hand as well which helps him on the dribble drive. A few of his baskets in the video came from nice soft floaters in the paint. Turnovers seemed to come when he tried to dribble too much and maybe relied on his right hand a little too much. He could have passed out of those traps a little quicker to avoid the turnover. I did not see enough of his defense to make a judgment on that part of his game but agree there were no highlights of his play there. He reminds me of a left handed Malik Wilson with perhaps a better perimeter shot. His free throw shooting may be a little better than Malik's as well. Malik is probably better on defense right now. Still, a player to be very excited about coming into our program. Anyone who can score 28 against that type of competition obviously has lots of skills.

Was Laurie Bridges of the Jessie Evans days left handed? Jalen Johnson who was on the team last year but is now at Miss. State is left handed.

I seem to recall someone here on RP was sure that Elfrid Payton was natural left hander, but had been raised to be a righty.

Bridges most definitely was, the only other I can recall off the top of my head is Justin Miller.

    Wasn't Alonza Allen left handed?
