St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says one person is dead after a car plunged into the Atchafalaya River in Melville.

Witnesses say the driver of the car lost control, struck a barricade and plunged into the Atchafalaya River just as the Melville Ferry was pulling in. The car was wedged underneath the ferry.
An investigation is underway.
